Background Basics
HOW IR WORKS
Two parts to the sensor:
HOW IR WORKS
Transmitter:
sends out a wave at a certain frequency
Most of the time this is a LED type of
component since light is part of the heat
wave of infrared
HOW IR WORKS
Reciever :
The reciever is designed to pick up a
reflected wave, or to sense a change in the
area.

CHOOSING A SENSOR
THINGS TO CONSIDER
What you are doing?
What do you need to sense?
How much money do you have?
For a senoir project we needed some sensors to keep
a voice driven wheelchair safe when moving
backward.
After looking at the situation the best choice for the job were
infrared sensors.
Looking at the sensors available the Acroname GP2D15 was
an excellent choice.
You can see that this sensor
has both a transmitter and a
reciever. It looks for objects
and not for motion.
SPECIFICATIONS:
The important specs to look at are, range, power,
and interfacing.
GP2D15
10 inches

digital (1 for I see, 0 for I see nothing
LIMITATIONS
How ever they are best for use in the air. They will not sense
through solid objects like a wall or the ocean.
When used for motion detection they wont sense objects that
dont emit infrared waves or produce heat.
When used for object detection typically they have a myopic view
or tunnel vision.
PURCHASING
IR sensors are probably on the cheaper side of sensors, but
like most things if you want to spend money you can eat up
a bunch of it with IR sensors.
Most range from $2 to $100
GP2D15
$11.50
