This document provides information about infrared sensors in 3 paragraphs. It includes an introduction to infrared sensors, the working principles of active and passive IR sensors, and some applications of IR sensors such as in radiation thermometers, IR imaging devices, and moisture analyzers. The introduction defines infrared radiation and explains that IR sensors can measure and detect IR in the surrounding environment. It then discusses the two main types of IR sensors - active sensors that both emit and detect IR and passive sensors that only detect IR. Finally, it lists some common applications that utilize the properties of IR sensors.

INTRODUCTION • An infrared (IR) sensor is an electronic device that measures and detects infrared radiation in its surrounding environment. • IR is invisible to the human eye, as its wavelength is longer than that of visible light. Anything that emits heat gives off infrared radiation. Working Principle Of IR Sensors • Planck’s radiation law • Stephan Boltzmann law • Wein’s Displacement law IR SENSORS TYPES AND WORKING • There are two types of infrared sensors: active and passive. A. Active IR Sensors:- • Active infrared sensors both emit and detect infrared radiation. Active IR sensors have two parts: a light emitting diode (LED) and a receiver. When an object comes close to the sensor, the infrared light from the LED reflects off of the object and is detected by the receiver. • Active IR sensors act as proximity sensors. IR SENSORS TYPES AND WORKING B) Passive IR Sensors (PIR):- • Passive infrared (PIR) sensors only detect infrared radiation and do not emit it from an LED. • Passive infrared sensors are comprised of: 1. Two strips of pyroelectric material 2. An infrared filter 3. A fresnel lens 4. A housing unit ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES A. ADVANTAGES:- 1) It provides secured communication due to line of sight or point-to-point mode of communication. 2) The battery used in infrared devices last for long duration due to lower power consumption. 3) Infrared motion sensors detect motion in daytime and nightime reliably. B. DISADVANTAGES:- 1) Infrared frequencies are affected by hard objects (e.g. walls, doors) 2) Infrared waves at high power can damage eyes. 3) It supports lower data rate transmission compare to wired transmission. APPLICATION OF IR SENSOR A) Radiation Thermometers IR sensors are used in radiation thermometers to measure the temperature depend upon the temperature and the material of the object and these thermometers have some of the following features: • Measurement without direct contact with the object • Faster response • Easy pattern measurements B) IR Imaging Devices • IR image device is one of the major applications of IR waves, primarily by virtue of its property that is not visible. It is used for thermal imagers, night vision devices, etc. APPLICATION OF IR SENSORS C) Moisture Analyzers • Moisture analyzers use wavelengths which are absorbed by the moisture in the IR region. Objects are irradiated with light Then, Lights reflected from the objects tells us about the moisture content and is detected by analyzer to measure moisture. THANK YOU
