Title: Black Boxes
1.1 Integration of Objectives
SWBAT identify conceptual or physical models
SWBAT define a system
SWBAT create their own replica of the first black boxes they first tested.
1.2 Standards
Foss Kit
1.3 Anticipatory Set
Review with students what they did when they were given the taped black
boxes. Review what a model is, what it is used for, and why scientist use
them. Introduce students that they will be replicating their boxes, either A or
B.
1.4 Procedures
Read Scientific Mysteries with students.
Review black box directions.
Pass out supplies.
Allow whole class period to complete their own boxes.
1.5 Differentiation
Learning support students will be grouped appropriately and assisted by their
aid.
1.6 Closure
Review with students their process they went through to figure out how to
replicate their original black box. Open boxes to check their work.
1.7 Assessment
Formative- check for understanding through whole group discussion.

Summative- collect models.
