Concert Title and Date: UNM Jazz Combos 10/02/2014
Composer: Antonio Carlos Jobim Describe the performing ensemble: Jazz combo. From the audience point of view, the most close instrumentists were the 2 saxophonists and the trumpeter which was in the middle of them. To the left and little bit further in the stage there was the pianist; behind the leading trio, the bassist and the drummer to the right. List the instruments in the ensemble: Trumpet, 2 saxophones, piano, bass and drums. Describe the melody: The melody was calm, very subtle throughout the whole song and the main theme was hypnotizing. The dynamics of this composition is what you would expect from a Bossa Nova song: it alternates between mezzo-piano and piano however, this performance in particular the performers played some parts in pianissimo. As for the texture, it is homophonic with the piano sometimes playing the melody instead of the saxophones and trumpet. Andante tempo, and very smooth rhythm; the harmony was played in A major key. Write a paragraph explaining your personal reaction to the piece: Being from Brazil, I couldnt be more satisfied to listen to a Brazilian composer (and genius) here at UNM. I never expected that. Tom Jobims music is loved all around Brazil, and I am no different. Listening to this piece made me go back home. Unlike some others songs played at the same concert, I didnt feel anxious or restless wanting for the song to be over. I felt very relaxed during the performance and paid attention to every detail like the bass background and when the piano took over the melody. This song made my night. For it to be better, only if I were in a less formal environment where I could have a meal, maybe a beer and enjoying the company of a woman.
