Inordertounderstandthemechanismthatmetaloxidesusetocatalyzereaction,
information,suchasthestrengthandnumberofacidsitesonmetaloxides,isneeded.
ThisiscarriedoutbyadsorbingNH3,pyridine,CH3CN,NO,orCOmoleculestothe
surfaceofthemetaloxide,andconductinganIRspectroscopy.Pyridineisthefavored
moleculetouseatroomtemperatureandhigherbecauseofitsstability,selectivityand
strengthtowhichitisadsorbed.
