My Brother Martin: A Sister Remembers Growing Up with the Rev. Dr.

Martin Luther King Jr

By Christine King Farris
This book was very good and I really enjoyed it as a read aloud for the class. I thought
that it was an appropriate book to read, with Martin Luther King Jr. day so close. The book gave
a different perspective on Dr. King Jrs life, which was interesting. Many people only know
Martin Luther King Jr. as a leader, but they dont know of him during his younger years. This
book showed how he was as a child, and how he grew to be the leader that everyone knew him
as. This book showed how racism truly affected the King family and how Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. grew to one day have a dream, and make that dream successful.

When I Was Young in the Mountains

By Cynthia Rylant
This short story was about a young child who was living in the mountains, and what she
did mostly every day. The story gave us insight into who Cynthia was as a child and how her
family interacted and lived. I thought that this story was cute and fun, and showed a unique
outlook on some peoples lives who are different than us.
