ASEPTIC PROCEDURE
1. Inform the patient.
2. Obtain consent (document).
3. Observe/ examine site.
4. Select appropriate dressing/device.
5. Ensure all sterile items are available.
Check use by date and that packaging is intact and dry (dispose of
immediately if not).
6. Prepare the area, including decontamination of the surface to be used with
detergent and water followed by drying. It can then be disinfected using a wipe
containing 70% alcohol and water.
7. Decontaminate hands (according to hand hygiene policy) this may again be
required during the procedure if hand contamination should occur.
8. Wear appropriate personnel protective equipment for the task to be
undertaken.
9. Perform the procedure including appropriate patient skin preparation where
relevant.
10. Protect key parts of equipment at all times using a non touch technique.
(Achieved by using sterile gloves or sterile forceps)
11. Non key parts can be touched with confidence.
12. Maintain a sterile Field:
Place only sterile items within the sterile field.
Avoid contamination of objects
Do not allow other personnel to reach across the sterile field or touch sterile
items.
Recognise and maintain the sterile area.
If a sterile barrier has been wet, cut or torn consider it contaminated.
Replace contaminated items immediately.
Do not place sterile items near windows or doors.
If an items sterility is in doubt discard it.
13. When procedure complete dispose of all clinical waste as per policy and wash
hands
