Most of the black and white illustrations have been taken from A Critical Enguiry into Ancient Armour in Europe, vols. 1 and 2, by Sir Samuel Meyrick (1824) and A Treatise on Ancient Armour and Weapons by Francis Grose (1786). The photographs are repro- duced by courtesy of the Keeper, the Library of the Victoria and Albert Museum. (Photographer, Berkhamsted Photographic, Berkhamsted, Hertford- shire.) Sir Samuel Meyrick was the father of the study of armour in England, and the first collector on an extensive scale: much of his collection is now in the Wallace Collection. The paintings in his book were based on actual weapons and armour, or the evidence supplied by tomb effigies, monuments and illuminated manuscripts. The author and publisher wish to thank the Royal Artillery Institution and the Wallace Collection for supplying the remainder of the photographs. ISBN 0 85045 245 7 Filmset in Great Britain .
