Topic Proposal: Epidural Effects on Unborn Babies

Statement of Purpose:
The purpose of conducting this research project is because is I plan to enter this career
field of nurse anesthetist after college. I have always wanted to expand my knowledge of
anesthesia and its effects. I have family members who have been administered epidurals before
the birth of their children. I want to know the effects, if any, on the unborn child. I would also
like to know if there are any effects on the mother. I wish to understand the epidural process and
how we can eliminate or control the effects.

Background:
I have no personal experience with using an epidural. My mother had epidurals during
the birth of myself and my brother. My mother often complains of back pain. My aunts were
administered epidurals.

Significance:
This topic is of importance to me because I will have to deal with epidurals when I
become an anesthetist. I may opt to have an epidural if I decide to have a child. Its significant

because millions of people in the world use epidurals and have questions about the use. I also
realize that I would have to deal with this throughout my career.

Description:
In my process of research, I will use internet search engines, textbooks, and articles as
resources. I will also use personal interviews of mother who received epidurals. The internet
will help me find out different medications that can be used and many different effects.
Interviews will help me understand personal view points.

Methodology:
I will research what epidurals are and the process of administration. I will also research
documented effects of epidurals.

Problems:
I believe I will have an issue with finding mothers from different
backgrounds/races/ethnicities to interview. Their answers will also be subjective. I have not
researched this topic, so there may be no sufficient effects. The effects of anesthesia during the
birthing process.
