Dear RAMS Members:
Today, the Campaign Finance Board confirmed that your hiring of me to be Executive Director
of RAMS is not a conflict of interest. The contract we entered into states that I would take a
leave of absence, without pay, during legislative sessions and not serve as a lobbyist for RAMS.
It further stated that if the board determined there was a need for a lobbyist, the board would be
responsible for hiring and overseeing the lobbyist. The contract and the description of the
Executive Director position in the RAMS bylaws define that lobbying is not part of Executive
Directors role.
My job as State Senator is a significant oneone I take very seriously. In my 23 years of public
service I have earned the merits of seniorityfrom which Senate District 6 benefits. We have
very important issues, such as Essar, Polymet, permitting, energy issues and countless others
that support the ongoing vitality of the Iron Range, which can come before the Senate
committee I chair. I remain committed to serving my constituents and the Iron Range.
While I am able to perform the duties of both jobs, the distraction of holding both jobs has
become untenable. I believe that if I continue as Executive Director of RAMS that it could have
unintended consequences. RAMS is a great organization. The enthusiasm I have witnessed for
the organization is an indication that it is well positioned to become bigger and better. One
Range_ One Voice is something we can never stop promoting.
We have committed no conflict of interest, nor illegal action. The perception being touted at the
Capitol has the potential to make my association with RAMS a risk to my effectiveness as your
State Senator. My commitment to the Iron Range and RAMS is unwavering. Therefore, it is with
deep regret that I must submit my resignation, effective immediately, as Executive Director of
RAMS.
I thank you for putting your trust in me as the Executive Director. The Iron Range has a history
of meeting challenges head on as a united force. Lets take this opportunity to increase the
strength and validity of the RAMS association and Iron Range. One Range_One Voice.
Sincerely,

David Tomassoni
