Ethics- standards of moral conduct


Computer ethics- guidelines for the morally
acceptable use of computers
Eg: the right to keep personal information from
getting into unauthorized hands

*Copyright and Digital Rights Management


Copyright- legal concept that gives content creators the right to control
use and distribution of their work
Eg of copyright violation- making an unauthorized copy of digital music
file
Software piracy is the unauthorized copying and/or distribution of
software
Digital rights management (DRM)- used to prevent copyright violation
by:
1- controlling the number of devices that can access a given file
2- limiting the kinds of devices that can access a file

Digital Millenium Copyright Act


- makes it illegal to copy or download copyright-protected music and
videos from the Internet without appropriate authorization
- makes it a crime to sell or use programs or devices that are used to
illegally copy software
There are many legal sources for digital media exists, including:
* Television programs that can be watched online on television-networksponsored site (eg: Tonton)
* Sites that allow listeners to enjoy music at no cost (eg: Pandora)
* Online stores that legally sell music and video content (eg: Apples
iTunes Music Store)

*Plagiarism
Plagiarism- representing other persons work and ideas as your own
without giving credit to the original source
Eg- cutting and pasting content from a web page into a report or paper
without giving credit
Turnitin- used to prevent Internet plagiarism
- examines the content of a paper and compare it to public
electronic documents
- exact duplication or paraphrasing is readily identified
