What does
possessive
mean?

It means to
own
something

Can you write

this sentence in
an another
way?

Example:
this book is for
Linda.

This is

lINDAs

book.

Example:

the boxes.

These are the

cover.

boxes

What do we use to
show the
possessive?

Correct: An
apostrophe

Look at these two

sentences:

1. This is lINDAs book.

2. These are the
boxes

covers.

Why is the place

of the apostrophe
different in each
one?

Correct!
Because the first one is Singular
Possessive Noun
This is lINDAs book.

And Because the second one is

plural Possessive Noun

These are the boxes covers.

Remember!
in the Singular Possessive
Noun, the apostrophe comes
before the (s)
This is lINDAs book.

in the plural Possessive Noun,

the apostrophe comes after the (s)
These are the boxes cover.

Do you know that

sometimes we put
apostrophe in the
plural possessive
noun before the s?

This is when the

plural doesnt end
with an (s).

Example:
the childrens room.

Apostrophe with Singular and

plural:
the singular possessive nouns
has 2 cases:
1) The singular possessive noun
that doesnt end with an s .
Example: The girls shoes.
2) The singular possessive noun
that ends with an s .
Example: Jesss bag.

In both cases , we put

the Apostrophe before
the s, and we call it
apostrophe s .

the plural possessive nouns

has 2 cases:
1) The plural possessive noun
that ends with an s .
Example: The boxes covers.
2) The plural possessive noun
that doesnt end with an
s .
Example: The childrens
room.

In the first case, we put

the Apostrophe after
the s, and we call it s
apostrophe.
In the second case, we
put the Apostrophe
before the s, and we
call it apostrophe s.

How could we know if the possessive

noun is singular or plural?

Answer: You will have clues in the

sentences especially the verbs:
Example: The boys eyes widened
as
he saw his present.
( He and his here shows that it is
singular).
So we say: The boys eyes
widened as he saw his present.
