ae Se al Hungary was an ally of Nazi Ger-] many and took part in the inva- sion ofthe USSR After defeat in battle in 1944 Hun- ‘gary tried to negotiate independ- ent peace terms with the Allies. Nazi Germany then invaded Hun- ‘gary to prevent this and installed “puppet” government made up. from the Fascist Arrow Party. ‘The Arrow Party's: Government of National Unity ruled an ever shrinking Hungary for 6 months. In that time it managed to deport ‘over 600 000 Jews to Auschwitz, for extermination. ‘The Soviet Red Army conquered all of Hun- gary by April 1945, after destroying the capi- tal city Budapest in a 2 month siege. ‘The behaviour of the Red Army after the con- quest is controversial with stories of wide- spread rape and murder following in their wake. ‘Learning Gain - by the end of this lesson | will be able to summarise What had happened to Hungary during and immediately after the war; to predict and explain the effect of Destalinisation on the Soviet Bloc and Hungary in particular. What would we expect Stalin do now he had "Liberated" Hungary? ~ Mmmm, what to do with Hungary? Stalin moved quickly to establish a Communist "Puppet" Government after the USSR occupied Hungary. But what would his ally Churchill remind him of after Yalta? In the promised free elections in Hungary during Feb. 1947, the Communists recieved only 17% of the popular vote. They joined a coalition government with their leader Rakosi becoming only Deputy Prime Minister. Nagy became Prime Minister. but not today One day | will be Rakosi number 1! Rakosi - Stalin's man. Imre Nagy - elected by people. In the next Parliamentary election in Aug. 1947 despite widespread cheating by the communists, they only managed to improve from 17% to 24%. Faced with a second defeat and under orders from Stalin in Moscow, the Communists led by Rakosi simply took over the state ignoring the democratic wishes of the Hungarian people. Oposition leaders were imprisoned or exiled. 18th Aug. 1949: The Hungarian Parliament passed a new constitution modelled on the USSR constitution. Hungary was now a communist country and a satellite state of the USSR. THIS COULD BE ACHIEVED BECAUSE THE SOVIET RED ARMY WERE STILL OCCUPYING THE COUNTRY. Life under Rakosi - Rakosi modelled himself on Stalin and ruled absolutely using fear to control the population and his political rivals: From 1950 to 1952, the Security Police forcibly relocated thousands of people to obtain property and housing for the Working People's Party members, and to remove the threat of the intellectual and 'bourgeois’ class. Thousands were arrested, tortured, tried, and imprisoned in concentration camps, deported to the east, or were executed. Education was politicised - effectively brainwashing the youth, religion was strictly controlled and living standards fell. Rakosi's government was the most repressive in Europe. Rule Chek here Chex nore With the death of Stalin came an amzing turnaround in the USSR. Its new leader Nikita Kruschev started a campaign to reverse the strict Stalinist policies and introduce some freedoms and openess in Soviet cultural and political life. Millions of political prisoners were released and a focus on producing household goods saw living standards rise. Kruschev's policy of Destalinisation had unexpected consequences in the Soviet satellite states. Poland managed to throw off its puppet government and although remaining communist and part of the Warsaw Pact she suffered less meddling in her affairs from Moscow. In Hungary, Nagy a reformist replaced Rakosi as Prime Minister of Hungary and began to try and change Hungary. 17th October =— How Did the Cold War Develop?
