Overview

Hudson middle school has all the

components of a middle school.
The implementation is not there.
Particularly:
Advisory
Exploratory

Advisory

HIVE-Hudsons Program
Meets for 20 minutes a day after 1st period

on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

Students stay with the same teacher
throughout all of middle school.
Teachers say its ineffective.
Biggest problem: Apathy
Now think if you were stuck with an apathetic
advisory teacher for three years.

Exploratory

Club Days
Also ineffective
Meet once a month
Due to weather, clubs have met only 4

times this whole year.

OE- Encore/Elective classes

Band students get shorted.

Curriculum

Mixed views
Downwardly pushes students.
Not developmentally ready, but effective.
Meets all the developmental areas.

Depends on subject being taught.

Had a hard time developmentally not
ready students.
Both teachers used this term
Endearment?
Not Challenging the students in a healthy way?

Not EVERYTHING is bad!

Hudson does many things very well.

Particularly:
The school climate
Involvement of the community

School Climate

Full time resource officer, nurse, and

social worker.
Feeling of reverence.
Students are EXPECTED to respect others,

especially their teachers-you dont want to

mess with Dr. Griffin.

Punitive Climate?
Not a lot of rewards.

Community Involvement

Interesting views.
Counselor vs. Teachers.

Field Trips.
Around and outside the county.

Local business support.

PBIS-volunteers help struggling students.
Collaboration with high school and the local
community college.
Donkey Ball
Beginning and end of the year celebrations
Coincide with parent teacher conferences.

Conclusion

Hudson, while it has its faults, is a great middle

school. It involves the local community and the
climate of the school is inviting, safe, and healthy
The school does have its faults, especially regarding
advisory and exploratory courses.
However, the school still does better than the
district on tests scores, though half of the schools
population is listed as Economically Disadvantaged.
We cannot help but think how much better the
school would perform if students were able to get a
well practiced advisory and exploratory program.
