Balance in an Ecosystem

A balanced ecosystem is an ecosystem

where the biotic and abiotic components
are in equilibrium.
Ecological succession is a process
whereby a disturbed area may be
colonised by a variety of species which
are gradually replaced by others.

Succession occurs when the pioneer

organism species
have modified and
improved the environmental factors for the
other organisms.
The number of new species will increase and
eventually replace the pioneer species as a
dominant species in that habitat.

The process of succession will continue

gradually until a stable state called a
climax community is formed in that
habitat eg. a tropical rainforest.
The process of succession in the
different habitat which led to the
climatic community creates a variety of
organisms which interact with the
habitat and leads to biodiversity.

The aim of preserving and

conserving is to ensure that the
habitat of the flora and fauna and
the natural resources continue to
exist with minimum impact from
the activities of man.

The effects of man`s activities

on the ecosystem are
Soil erosion
Flash flood
Eutrophication
Land slides

Deforestation
Extinction of flora and
fauna
Climatic changes
Green house effect

The methods of preserving

and conserving the ecosystem
Recycling
Replanting of trees in forest
Treatment of toxic wastes
Research activities to decrease
effects of pollution

The effect of extinction of an

organism on an ecosystem
Creates imbalance of the ecosystem
and disturbs the dynamic equilibrium
