ANANSI (“Anansi means spider, the wily character often found in West African folk tales.) SUGGESTIONS ; ‘* Teach the donno drum part first, as it is probably most likely to give problems. Work at it slowly at first, to lear the necessary coordination of the in-out-middle- out pattern. * Players say “in, out, middle, out” to begin, as they move their left elbow toward and away from the body to simulate the movement of playing the drum. Allow all players to havea chance to play the donno as students really enjoy playing this drum. It is held com- fortably tucked up under the left arm, held faitly close to the body. Explain that since the drum heads are attached with strings or thong, when the laces are squeezed in by the elbow, they pull on the head and raise the pitch. When they are released, they are more relaxed, loosen the head and lower the pitch, * Grip the donno drum stick like a hammer, but loosely, to permit the stick to bounce off the head and create a clean tone.
