ANALYSIS OF A MOVIE- STEPMOM

The movie, Stepmom, is directed by Chris Columbus and produced in 1998. It entails
Jackie who is made to accept another woman to take care of her three children (Roberts,
Sarandon et al, 1998). Jackie, who is divorced by Luke, discovers that she is suffering from
cancer and facing medical tests and chemotherapy. The new woman, Isabel who is about marry
by Jackies ex-husband, is to become the stepmother of the Jackies children. In addition, she
worries about her children in the hands of Isabels care. Isabel tries her best in taking care of
Jackies children, while still doing her work. However, Jackie finds Isabels efforts as inefficient
and insufficient. At last, Jackie is made to accept Isabel as part of the family, while Isabel learns
some lessons on good parenting (Roberts, Sarandon et al, 1998).
From this movie, various things can be leant. Isabel is not a nurturing type to children
but at the end she learns parenting methods and she is able to take good care of the kids. The
director incorporates synergy of the body, mind and spirit in Jackie. Jackie is thinking how she
will leave her children, her body is suffering from cancer and her spirit is hard on Isabel for her
lack of parenting roles. Luke, Jackies husband is a father and busy concentrating with work,
while Isabel is a middle-aged woman who is a high-fashioned photographer (Roberts, Sarandon
et al, 1998). On the other hand, Jackie is old and ill who loves her children. The presence of a
dying mother is very sensitive to the young kids. Isabel tries her best to take care of her
stepdaughters and stepsons. The movie ends while Jackie is bedridden, where Jackie accepts
Isabel to be part of the family. This makes all the hatred and friction they possessed ended, while
Isabel is left to take care of the children (Roberts, Sarandon et al, 1998). This movie teaches on
the roles of parenting, divorce and death in the presence of little children who require parents
love and care as they grow.
