Characteristics of a Dystopian Society

Propaganda is used to control the citizens of


society.

Information, independent thought, and


freedom are restricted and discouraged.

A figurehead or concept is worshipped by the


citizens of the society.

Citizens are perceived to be under constant


surveillance.

Citizens have a fear of the outside world.

Citizens live in a dehumanized state.


(Behaviors are restricted and controlled i.e. it
is good to support the government, it is bad to
dissent)

The natural world is banished and distrusted.

Citizens conform to uniform expectations.


Individuality and dissent are bad.

The society is an illusion. The people believe


that they live in perfection when it is not really
the best for them.

People dress in required clothing or a strict


dress-code is enforced.

Strict, public punishments are given out to


those who break the rules.

Literature and Media is strictly controlled to


reflect the views of the controlling power (i.e.
government or king or aliens or machines)
