Kaiser Brief

In terms of the findings on the parents concern for children’s exposure to sex, violence,
and adult language in the media I found it interesting that concern has actually gone
down in recent years.

I wonder if this is a result of new technologies for regulating media in the house hold and
a generation of young parents who may be more technologically confident.

In addition, I found the findings on the racial differences between parental concern eye
catching. I assume that it is strongly related to the way minority groups are represented in
the media that is and industry run by the rich, white male. The consequences of having
your minority group represented in the media can definitely negatively effect that
minority culture.

Similarly, I have inner turmoil with a lot of the ways the LGBT culture is represented in
the media. I often question how much of that representation of a minority group by the
dominant culture effects molding that group into what they are expected to be.

I also think it is interesting how it appears that media is viewed much more positively for
young children, but then viewed as more of a danger zone once children reach that high
school age.

I wonder if that conclusion stems from parents having much less control or confidence In
what exactly their highschool children are listening to/ watching where whent hey were
younger they felt like they had a lot more control over what was being scene and heard.

It is clear from the research that media is blowing up out of control in the past decade.
There is so much more media at the fingertips of adolescence and it is almost impossible
to control what is being viewed. I guess that is where I am confused how the concern for
media is going down while the availability of media is going up.

Do you think parents are desensitized to media sources now that it has become sucha n
integral part of society?
