Question 1:

Sketch the process flow diagram for the reforming process.

Question 2:
Simulate the process in Aspen HYSYS. Discuss all of your assumptions, process conditions,
the steps that you used to simulate the process starting from the selection of components,
thermo package, setting up reactions, setting up case studies etc.
Step 1:
Component list:
Methane (CH4), Carbon dioxide (CO2) ,Carbon monoxide(CO) , Hydrogen(H2), Water (H2O)
Step 2:
Fluid package: PRSV
Step 3:
Select mixer and name it.

Step 4:
Fill the condition:
For steam:
Temperature = 210C
Pressure = 16 bar
Molar flow = 3 kgmole/h
For natural gas:
Temperature = 30C
Pressure = 16 bar
Molar flow = 1 kgmole/h

Step 5:
Fill up the composition. Where composition for water =1 and natural gas = 1

Step 6:
Select heat exchanger.
Name the stream as shown and assume the pressure drop = 0 kPa

Step 7:
Fill the condition where temperature = 450oC and pressure = 1600 kPa

Step 8:
Select equilibrium reactor and name it.

Step 9:
For reaction 1:

Reaction 2:

CH 4 + H 2 O CO +3 H 2

CO+ H 2 O C O2 + H 2

Get the equilibrium from reaction 1 and 2

Step 10:
Fill the condition as shown below.

Step 11:
Select the second heat exchanger and name it as shown.

Step 11:
Fill the condition as shown.

Fill the composition of water = 1

Question 3:

Develop case studies to increase the production of syngas (CO and H2) through:
a Manipulation of feed temperature
b Manipulation of reaction temperature
c Manipulation of operating pressure

Manipulation of feed temperature:

Assume Low Bound as 400oC, High Bound 500oC and step size as 5 then we get 21
numbers of states.

Manipulation of reaction temperature

Choose vapour (CO and H2) and the variables are Master Comp Mole Fraction
for both CO and H2. These 2 variables are not independent.
After that we assume Low Bound as 450 oC, High Bound 1000oC and step size
as 10 then we get 56 numbers of states.

Manipulation of operating pressure

Choose vapour (CO and H2) and the variables are Master Comp Mole Fraction
for both CO and H2. These 2 variables are not independent.
After that we assume Low Bound as 1000oC, High Bound 1601oC and step
size as 200 then we get 61 numbers of states.
