Romania entered the 1990s as a relatively poor country due to failed economic policies under Nicolae Ceaușescu in the 1970s and issues with privatization in the 1990s, which led GDP to decrease by 50% and ruined industry with corruption. The austerity strategy slowed the economy, raised unemployment, and lowered consumption, dampening optimism. While Romania's debt was paid off in the 1980s through severe austerity that deprived citizens of goods, the current economic situation prevents Romania from assisting the US, and austerity should not be reapplied, as change can come from committed citizens working together.

Honourable Chairs , Distinguished Delegates , good afternoon ,
Romania entered the 1990s a relatively poor country by European standards,
largely a result of the failed economic policies of Nicolae Ceauescu in the 1970s and of the failures of privatization in Romania during the 1990s. As a result, the GDP decreased by almost 50% and ruined the industry because of corruption. Moreover, the austerity strategy slowed the economy, raised the unemployment rates and low consumption decreased optimism for the future. Nonetheless, Romania's debt was largely paid off during the 1980s by implementing severe austerity measures which deprived Romanians of basic consumer goods. The actual economic situation of Romania makes this country incapable of giving help to the US . Although, the austerity measures must not be applied again. It should be another way of solving this problem , as Margaret Meade once said: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful commited citizens can change the world indeed it is the only thing that ever does.
