WHAT ARE TOUCH SENSITIVE

DEVICES?
Atouch screenis anelectronic visual displaythat the user can control
through simple ormulti-touch gesturesby touching the screen with one or
more fingers.
Some touch screens can also detect objects such as astylusor ordinary or
specially coated gloves. The user can use the touch screen to react to what is
displayed and to control how it is displayed .

How do they work?

Touch screens detect the placement of a finger on a screen, ranging from mechanical,
optical, and electrical sensing.
Todays capacitive electrical touch screens have proven to be the most versatile and efficient
way to sense human touch.
First, the monitor can act as a measuring sensor and respond to the tip of your finger or
other object and turn the touch into an electrical signal.

TYPES OF TOUCH SENSITIVE

DEVICES
Resistive: A resistive touch screen panel comprises several layers. A
voltage is applied to one layer, and sensed by the other. When an object,
such as a fingertip or stylus tip, presses down onto the outer surface, the
two most important layers touch to become connected at that point: The
panel then behaves as a pair of voltage dividers, one axis at a time. By
rapidly switching between each layer, the position of a pressure on the
screen can be read.
Capacitive: A capacitive touch screen panel consists of an insulator
such as glass, coated with a transparent conductor. As the human body
is also an electrical conductor, touching the surface of the screen results
in a distortion of the screen's electrostatic field. Different technologies
may be used to determine the location of the touch. The location is then
sent to the controller for processing.
Self Acoustic Waves: technology uses ultrasonic waves that pass over
the touch screen panel. When touched, the change is sent for processing.
Infra red grid: Uses LED infrared rays around the edges f the screen
to detect the disruption in the pattern of the LED beams. This helps the
sensors know where the screen is being touched.

Infrared Acrylic Projection: A translucent

acrylic sheet is used as a rear projection screen to
display information.
Optical Imaging: A touch shows up as a shadow
and each pair of cameras can then be pinpointed
to locate the touch or even measure the size of
the touching object
Dispersive signal technology: This system
uses sensors to detect the Piezoelectricity which
is then interpreted and the area that was touched
is located.
Acoustic pulse recognition: a touch at any one
position on the surface generates a sound wave,
which is then matched to previous sounds to find
the location of the touch.

ADVANTAGES OF TOUCH DEVICES.

Touch screen devices have limited buttons that

will possibly break after 3 4 years.
Touch screen devices usually have simpler user
interfaces. Example: IPod Apps.
Having less or not buttons means that you
canput more effort into having a big screen
Forthe people worriedabout hygiene, most
devices are easy to clean, some are even dirt,
dust and grease resistant.
For people new or uncomfortable with normal
desktops, touch screens are easy to use helping
more people get used to using computers.
Much more convenient to use than keyboards.

DISADVANTAGES OF TOUCH
DEVICES.

The screen has to be big enough to be able to touch

the buttons without mistyping.

In direct sunlight it is much less efficient and most

of the time it is very difficult to read the screen.

If a touch screen device were to crash the whole

screen would be unresponsive, and because of the
lack of buttons, recovering it would be very difficult.
The screens always get dirty.

You have to be within arms reach of the device.

They usually cost more than ordinary devices.
Battery usually drains out quickly due to the
brightness and applications running.

IMPACTS OF TSD ON THE SOCIETY.

It has encouraged the disabled to explore the
technology being produced today.
It has made the younger generation lazy as it is
addictive and distractive.
It has made an impact on businesses as they are
using the technology for marketing purposes.
