KeithJohnsonisaformermilitaryofficerandnowaregisteredpharmacy
technicianatArnoldPalmerHospital,whilepursuingabachelor'sdegreein
MarketingattheUniversityofCentralFlorida.Johnsoncurrentlyservesasa
R2SvolunteerwithfirstgradersatWaterbridgeElementary.Weaskedhim
somequestionsabouthisexperiencewithRead2Succeedandhismilitary
career.

Tellusaboutyourcareerinthemilitary.
KJ:IenlistedintheArmyinDecemberof1988.Originally,Ijoinedthe
ReservesbecauseIwasafulltimestudentattheUniversityofSouth
Carolina.Shortlyaftercompletingmytraining,Iwascalleduptoactivedutyin
supportofOperationDesertStorm.Aftermissingafewsemestersofschool,I
decidedtoenlistfulltimetotakeadvantageofthemanyeducationalprograms
[themilitary]offered.
Alongwiththeeducationalopportunities,I'vebeenabletohelpchildrenin
differentcountriesaroundtheworld.InElSalvador,webuiltschools,clinics,

andwaterwellsforearthquakedamagedareas.InBosnia,wesuppliedwinter
clothingandfoodsupplies,donatedfromschoolfundraisersfordisplacedwar
refugees.
Unfortunately,aftertheeventsofSept.11,Iwasonceagaindeployedin
supportofOperationIraqiFreedomasaBroadcastJournalist/MediaRelations
NonCommissionedOfficer.
HowdidyouhearabouttheRead2Succeedprogram?
KJ:Initially,mywife,Tabitha,heardabouttheprogramandwenttothe
orientation.Whenshecamehomeandtoldmeaboutwhattheprogram
entailed,shethoughtImightbeinterested.IwasintriguedbecauseInever
heardoftheprogrambefore,soshesentmynameinsoIcouldbecontacted.
Whatencouragedyoutobeareading
volunteer?
KJ:Ithinkwhatencouragedmethemost
wasthefactthatIlovetoreadtomy
daughtersatbedtime.Icangetreally
animatedandusedifferentvoicesforeach
ofthecharactersinthestoriessotheystay
interested.Ifindmyselfgettinghoarseat
times.Also,mymotherisaretiredteacher
ofover40yearsintheNewYorkCitypublicschoolsystem.She'salways
stressedtheimportanceofreadingtochildren.Needlesstosay,ourhomeis
filledwithchildren'sbooks.
Whathasbeenafavoriteornoteworthyexperienceyou'vehadwith
Read2Succeedsofar?
KJ:Ithinkthemostrewardingthinghasbeenwatchingthegrowthofeachof
thechildrenIhelp.Inthebeginning,Ididn'tthinkIwasmakingmuchofa
difference.Butslowly,Inoticedimprovedwriting,moreattentivenessand
creativitywiththeirsentencechoices.They'vewarmeduptomeandIfind
thatwedoquiteabitoftalkingbeforereading.
Whatkindofbooksdoyouliketoread?Lastthingyouread?
KJ:Ilovereadinghorrorandautobiographies.Iwouldlovetobeabletowrite
likeStephenKing.Ialsoliketoreadbiographiestoseethetypesofobstacles
othershaveovercomesowhenthingsgetdifficultinmylife,Icanrelatetoor
usetheirexperiencestodrawstrength.
Unfortunately,Ihaven'thadmuchleisurereadingtimebecauseofschool,but
thelastnovelIreadwastheHungerGamestrilogy.Iknow,itsoundsalittle
youngadultish,buttheywereexcellent!Themovies,notsomuch.
WhatdoyouhopetogainfromyourexperienceasaR2Svolunteer?
KJ:Iwanttobeabletoimprovemytechnique.Thisismyfirstyeardoing
this,soI'mlearningaboutdifferentchildrenandstylesofhelping.I'dliketo
comebacknextyearandbemoreconfident.Honestly,Iwasprettynervousin
thebeginning.

StrategiesforPunctuationandFluency
Lastmonth'sEnrichmentSessionfeaturedRead2Succeedvolunteer,Kathy
Gill,asourguestspeaker.Shediscussedvariouslearningstrategiestohelp
studentsfocusonthetaskathand,whileimprovingtheirfluencyandreading
comprehension.
Mrs.GillintroducedtheconceptofS.L.A.N.T.,alearning
strategywhichillustrateshowthemindandbodywork
together.The"S"inS.L.A.N.T.standsfor"SitUp."
Itisimportantforstudentstositupinanupright
position.Thisiswhenthemindisinalertmode.It'stelling
thebodytopayattention.
The"L"standsfor"LeanForward."Studentsaremore
likelytofocuswhilereadingthisway,insteadofslouchingintheirseatsor
layingtheirheaddown.Thelatteractionstellthebodytorelaxandcancause
studentstobedistracted.Mrs.Gillsaidmanystudentswhostrugglewith
readingtendtobethemostdistracted,sofollowingthislearningstrategyis
imperativeforthemtoimprove.
The"A"standsfor"ActivateYourThinking."Thisallowsstudentstothink
aboutwhatthey'rebeingtaught.Forexample,youcandiscusswhat's
happeninginthestorywhilereadingabooktoyourfirstgrader.Askyour
secondgradersquestionsrelatedtothepassagethatrequirethemtothink
aboutwhatwassaidinthepassage.
Afterthis,studentswillbeabletodowhattheletter"N"standsfor,whichis
"NameKeyInformation."ThisisespeciallyrelevantfortheR2Sreading
fluencyprogram,whendiscussingthemainideaofapassage.Yourstudent
shouldbeabletoexplainwhattheylearned,answerquestionsaboutthetext
andpossiblyteachthatinformationtosomeoneelse.
The"T"inS.L.A.N.T.standsfor"TracktheTalker."Whetheryouareworking
withafirstorsecondgrader,yourstudentshouldbeabletolistentothe
speakerofthestoryorpassagetheyarereading.
Eveniftherearen'tanypictures,studentsshouldstilllisten.Thisisagreat
pointtodemonstratevariouspunctuationmarksandhowtoreadthem.
Forexample,makeyourvoicegoupalittlewhilereadingasentencewitha
questionmark,orgetloudwhenreadingonewithanexclamationmark.
Keepinmindthatasavolunteer,it'syourresponsibilitytomodelproper
readingtechniquesforyourstudents.Forsecondgraders,practicephrasing
duringtheechoandchoralreading.Phrasingisreferringtoreadingtextina
moreconnected,fluidway.It'sgoodtopointouthowphrasingcanimpactthe
meaninginastory.Thisisgreatpracticeevenforfirstgraders.

lookatourResourcesandTipspagefornewliteracyexercisesand
guidelines.
