THE THEORY OF MOVING SPACE AS A PHILOSOPHICAL
FOUNDATION OF THE YUGOSLAV ARMY HEADQUARTERS
BUILDING IN BELGRADE

The author of the architectural-urbanistic
complex of the buildings comprising the Yugoslav
Army Headquarters on the comers of Kneza MiloSa
and Nemanjina Streets in Belgrade, Nikola
Dobrovié, architect, supplemented with an original
theory of space set in motion. The essential princi
ples of his theory he propounded in the study
“Moving Space ~ Bergson's 'Dynamic Schemes'—a
New Visual Environment”. He found its origins in
the gnoseology of the French philosopher Henri
Bergson. The phrase emphasized in the title — "dy—
namic schemes" conceals the concrete source of
the author's inspiration with Bergson's opus, and the
philosophical basis of this architectural theory
should be looked for in Dobrovi¢'s free interpreta—
tion of Bergson's philosophy, founded on analogies
‘of more general nature. Namely, as the "process
philosophy" of genesis and change opposed tradi
tional philosophy, founded on the contemplation of
and the once forever given Being, so
Dobrovie's theory on the formation of a new visual

environment contended the exhausted, academic
architecture of statically cut forms. In his further
explanation that architectural space should be dy—
namized and in conformity with the true nature of
thinking, the "cinematographic mechanism of in—
telligence", Dobrovié introduced the element of
duration in architecture, just as Bergson returned
the same category to gnoseology. On the whole, by
linking "pure reflection” with the theory of contem—
porary architecture, Dobrovié accomplished much
more than a theoretical elaboration of his own
work, although it would be, even without broader
implications, a unique example in the history of
Serbian architecture. Moreover, many phenomena
in the 20th (and even 21st) century architecture, that
defy interpretation through classical aesthetic rules
— deconstruction, fragmentation, dislocation and
deformation of architectural structures, become un—
derstandable and more attractive when confronted
with possible application of the essential principles
of the theory of moving space.
