SECTION 1 Explain the torque-speed characteristics of the de motor type mentioned: {i) Shunt motor {i) Series motor and (ii) Cumulatively compound motor. OR Draw and explain the operation of 3-point starter. What modifications are incorporated in 4-point starter compared to 3-point starter? ADC shunt motor runs at 900 rpm from a 400 V supply when taking an armature current of 25 A. Calculate the speed at which it will run from a 230 V supply when taking an armature current of 15 A. The resistance of the armature circuit is 0.8 Q. Assume the flux per pole at 230 V is 75 % of its value at 400 V. Explain the principle of operation of poly-phase induction motor. Also compare the squirrel cage rotor with slip ring rotor with regards to their performance, Why starter is necessary for the induction motors? Explain star-delta starters with neat diagram. Full load torque is obtained at 360 rpm. Calculate (a) Speed at maximum torque (b) the ratio of maximum to full load torque (c) the external resistance per phase to be inserted in rotor circuit to get maximum torque at starting. Derive an expression of starting time (ts) of DC shunt motor, And explain why the starting time of the de motor is more dependent on the system inertia than the armature reactance. For electric welding, two types of power supplies are used AC and DC. Give the necessary electrical equipments and circuits used for designing this process, Also give relative advantages and disadvantages of AC and DC welding. SECTION IT Explain the two transistor analogy of a SCR? Draw and explain the VI characteristics of a SCR. How is the UJT configured to operate as a relaxation oscillator for the ‘triggering of SCR’s? Draw relevant circuit diagram. OR A 10.0 V stabilized power supply is required from a 24 V d.c. input source. ‘The maximum power rating of the zener diode is 10 W. Calculate: (a) maximum current flowing in the zener diode (b) the value of the series resistor Rs (c) the load current if a load resistor of 1 kQ is connected across the zener diode (d) the supply current Is. ‘The figure below shows a simple rectifier.
