ree Neue [TB EXPO 2015 reg rat POTENTIAL Br Ue As one of the most populous country, and world strangest emerging economy, Indonesia is facing a lot of economic challenges. In order for us to move forward and compete in the ever-changing land- scape of global market, we have to adapt with a growing demand to shift into innovation-driven economy. Innovation-driven economy is the ability to produce innovative products and services at the global technology frontier using the most advanced methods that becomes the dominant source of competitive advantage of a country. According to a recent Global Innovation Index 2014 survey by the World Intellectual Property Organization and INSEAD Business School, Indonesia is ranked 88th from the 143 countries surveyed. Meanwhile, our neighbors Singapore and Malaysia are doing very well in rank 7 and 33, respectively. This shows how much we are still lagging behind in terms of adopting with the innovation wave. The low ranking is caused by institutional related hindrance, such as an uncertain regulatory environment, and also a lack of knowledge workers. Nonetheless, we are actually capable to be innovative with such a scarce resource, since we are ranked 4th in terms of Innovation Efficiency Ratio, that shows we still produce a lot of creative and knowledge output. Moreover, the core of innovation movement in a country lies on its triple-helix. Tri- ple-helix is an organized cooperation between the government, the industry, and academi- cians. The role of academicians, especially students, in changing the economic system is to come up with new, fresh, and innovative solutions to enhance the livelihood in one coun- try. The young generation must be game-changers, be it in terms of creative economy, sus- tainable development, or in any kind of field. With our unparalleled spirit and unrivalled energy, we should have been the forefront of the triple-helix, creating new innovations that can be adopted by governments or businesses to create betterment. ae A ae lil However, Indonesian youth are not as innovative and creative as what they should have been. This problem is caused by a complacent mindset, in which we like to stay at our comfort zone and we settle for mediocrity. Furthermore, we also have a very "Eastern’ mindset, which is too afraid of failure. Indonesian youth, never celebrates failure like what our counterparts in ‘Western world always do. We like to believe that failure is something that hinders us from succeeding; not an integral part of success itself. Therefore, we have seen that the curiosity of Indonesian youth to experiment and tinker with things has significantly declined. We like to take things for granted, and sometimes left our critical thinking and problem-solving mindset some- where along the way. Based on those facts aforementioned, we captured a great necessity to enliven the innovation spirit in Indonesia's young generation, especially for university students, To kindle the spirit, we need to create a nation-wide movement. We have seen how student's movement can successfully topple down governments and create changes in the political system of this country. Having said that, those political movements are becoming obsolete. Now is the time for students to change the way an economy is run, and changing it for the better. Now is the time for students to experiment, and create things that we might never imagine before. It is time to be the key driver of a major change that will probably help Indonesia thrive and succeed in the next future. As the only university from Indonesia who made it to Top 200 Best University in the world based on QS World Ranking, we have more than enough re- sources to kick-start this movement into reality. Firstly, we have an excellent range of professors and faculty members, coming from 4 different areas of knowledge: technology, science, art, and management. Secondly, each year we always get a very diverse and highly talented pool of new students, with an acceptance rate of 1 out of 12 Those facts guarantee the quality of human capi- tal that is needed to jump-start an innovation movement, and with a little bit of effort, we might as well spread the movement to other universities nation-wide as well, So, what kind of movement are we making? We are creating the first ever, student-run digital movement that will focus on encouraging the young generation to innovate and produce works that are based on their field of study. There are three series of events that will help us start up this movement: Firstly, we will begin with a series of talks and lectures by inspiring people that might ignite the willingness to innovate, and those talks will be recorded and uploaded online in a website so that more people can get an access to that daily dose of inspiration. This is the core of our digital movement. Secondly, we will also have a competition that will generate a fresh and innovative proposal to solve a problem in the country, and the winning idea will get a large sum of capital in order to commercialize the idea and implement it to create real benefts, Lastly, we will have ITB Expo 2015, a one-day event in Sasana Budaya Ganesha, Bandung that will showcase the best works of ITB students and also act as an awarding night for those ‘game-changers, a big celebration for the innovators. The committee that is working on this movement are consisted of Institut Teknologi Bandune's undergraduate students who came from different knowledge background but with one thing in common: we had enough. We had enough of seeing other people just cursing the situation, while not trying to fix anything, Through those series of events, we hope to ignite the innovation spirit in our inner circle, which is, the students of Institut Teknologi Bandung, before finally launching a nation-wide ‘We see that Indonesian young generation actually has a lot of potential, if only we have the willingness to simply start and work hard. Hopefully, with the inception of ITB Expo 2015, we can unleash our hidden potential through innovation. When ‘we can reach our full potential and direct our energy in fixing the problems in this country, we do believe that good things will eventually happen, and this country can prosper in ways we never have imagined before. \ I / = -_
