Define Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing refers to both the applications delivered

as services over the Internet and the hardware and systems
software in the datacenters that provide those services.

The services themselves have long been referred to as

Software as a Service (SaaS).

The datacenter hardware and software over the internet is

what we will call a Cloud.

5 Essential Cloud
Characteristics

On-demand self-service

Broad network access

Resource pooling

Rapid elasticity

Measured service

Cloud computing Service

models

SaaS (Cloud Software as a Service)

Ready to use software over the Internet
PaaS (Cloud Platform as a Service)
Infrastructure is managed, client has to provide application.
IaaS (Cloud Infrastructure as a Service)
Client provision and manage hardware and software.

Uses cases

Production Surge
The ability to meet unpredictable surge demands.
Disaster Recovery
Low cost automated disaster recovery.
Storage
Low cost storage with the ability to expand on-demand
Development
A highly flexible and reliable development environment for applications.
Test
Repeatable on-demand test environments.
Public Web Services
Distribute publicly available information

Benefits

Cost Efficiency
Enable rapid provisioning and deployment of services
Scale on-demand
Mobility , Cloud enables access anywhere with a Web connection
Increased Storage Capacity

Disadvantages

Security
Vendor-lock in
Possible downtime
More elasticity means less control
Increased Vulnerability

Definition

I dont understand what we would do differently in the light of

Cloud Computing other than change the wordings of some of our
ads.
Larry Ellision, Oracles CEO

I have not heard two people say the same thing about it [cloud].
There are multiple definitions out there of the cloud.
Andy Isherwood, HPs Vice President of European Software Sales

Its stupidity. Its worse than stupidity: its a marketing hype

campaign.
