Two-Day Workshop at HCST

Industry Institute Interaction on Cluster Problems of
Leather and Foundry Industries
---------------------------------------Better interaction between institutions and industry is the need of the hour. This will have great
bearing on the exposure of industrial atmosphere to the students and subsequent placement. With
the advent of globalization and opening up of Indian economy to outside world, industries have
to strive continuously to remain competitive. Industry not only draws manpower from
institutions but there are other inputs which industry can get from institutions.
For many years now progress is limited to organizing Seminar's, Workshops and Cells in
Universities and Colleges. However, both Industry as well as Institutions wants to interact but do
not have time to do so.
Both industries as well as institutions are busy in attending to urgent and routine
activities. (production for industry and fixed curriculums for institutions). Although curriculums,
students are required to work in industries ("Summer Training") yet in majority of the cases this
is being done as a formality from both sides. There is therefore the need for more formal
mechanism that would strengthen industry-institute interaction.
In the background of above facts and good intensions from both sides, following factors are put
forward as prime concerns .

Serious involvement of industry in curriculum design is lacking.

More than 95% of the industrial units are in MSME Sector and involvement is negligible.

The gap between industry needs and the academic communities aspirations appears to be
considerably large.

However, the factors which hinder the industry institute interaction can be tackled provided we
ensure the following:

Interaction between academic and industry associations can be improved through sharing
of expertise at a common platform on specific areas/topics periodically.

Institutes may take up consultancy services in industry through industry associations like
solving specific problems of the industry.

Ideally the exchange of industry and institute experts is required.

Helping the institute & students for placements in industry.

Consequently, we the staff and faculty of HCST would like to take this opportunity to invite key
personnel from Agra-Mathura to undertake a Two-Day workshop modelled on Industry Institute

Interaction.
Objectives of Two-Day Workshop
The workshop will focus on the following objectives:

Strengthening local cluster for solving specific problems of the industry.

Strengthening institutions in terms of consultancy services and research.
Strengthening employability of students and sharing of expertise at a common platform.

Details
Close interaction between the institute and the industry/enterprise is seen as the
platform for showcasing best practices, latest technological advancements and their
implementation and impact on the Industry.
It is basically considered to improve the quality of technical adequately to meet the
needs of the industry and economy.
Industries are able to participate in technical programs, with the goal of cross-fertilizing
ideas for systems improvement.
Interaction is necessary as it develops awareness on job functions in the industry,
attitudes to adapt to industrial environment, proper practical and relevant knowledge,
skills and competencies in preparation.
Mutual benefit is derived from the shared expertise and experiences between the
industry and the institute.
Industry-institute interaction allows to explore endless possibilities in working in synergy
and derive a new focus to address socio-economic and technology-driven challenges.
One of the challenges in the present times is the rapid pace of technology which makes
skills obsolete at greater pace before everyone else could learn from them.
The excessive pace of technological changes has emphasized the need to integrate
technological knowledge and skills in education and training to expand life long
capabilities of a knowledge-based worker.
It has been observed that the economic pace of technological change makes 50 percent
(50%) of computer knowledge irrelevant within one year, technological knowledge in
three years, specialized vocational knowledge in five years and higher education
knowledge in 10 years.
Another serious challenge is the increasing complexities at work, which lead to the
growing need to adapt to new innovations in the market and adopt the technologies that
provide utmost efficiency in machine operations.
Thus complex procedures are borne. Considering that people and institutions are not
always interested in getting involved, partnerships through industry-institute interaction
can only be achieved by finding out strategies to draw relevant stakeholders into
systematic and reciprocal interaction to address such work place trends and technology
emancipation.

Scope:
Workshop will be open for participation by:
(a) Faculties of Engineering institutions.

(b) An estimated 20 industrial Units in leather and foundry cluster will be invited to improve the
sector competency and in parallel, our focus will be improving employability of our students.
Strategy:
This event iincludes a number of measures for the development of the cluster that
cover policy changes, special area development and development projects in key
sectors.
We will imposes clear imperatives towards increasing genuine engagements and
interaction between industry stakeholders, in particular between industry and
education institutions. A whole-of-industry approach will be required to secure future
skills needs. Eventually, the skills formation strategies are long-term processes that
help align skills supply, workforce development and business strategy through the
collaborative action of industry, government, education and training sectors.
Nature of Interaction
Problem Solving Interaction

The need for assimilating the latest technologies and technical capabilities to employ in
the industrial work systems necessitates a strong and continuing process of reviewing
the landscape of greater productivity approaches.
MSME and industries are heavily oriented towards raising competitiveness. There is a
genuine need to continuously study how best technologies can be optimized to achieve
productivity.
Institutes are in the best position to provide the intellectual augmentation and
innovations that serves industry purpose.
The identification of industrial problems and discovery of the ways to solve them are also
good motivations for industries.
For mutual benefits to be achieved, institutes draw their motivations in industry
interaction from the potential of getting relevant exposures to real industry problems,
engaging into intellectually challenging research, augmenting professional income
sources.

Placement

The event likely to be effective in drawing the best talent for the industry and they have
the privilege for employing new graduates.
Through a well-established industry-institute interaction, placement activities and similar
career orientation programs can lead to systematic recruitment of the right people for the
right job, thereby aiding skills matching that is highly required in some high technology
sectors.

Modus Operandi for Two-Day Workshop

The Distinguished Visiting Professor and Experts will be identified and invited to;

i)
ii)
