MERCUTIO
Where the devil should this Romeo be?
Came he not home to-night?
BENVOLIO
Not to his father's; I spoke with his man.
MERCUTIO
Ah, that same pale hard-hearted wench, that Rosaline.
Torments him so, that he will sure run mad.
BENVOLIO
Tybalt, the kinsman of old Capulet,
Hath sent a letter to his father's house.
MERCUTIO
A challenge, on my life.
BENVOLIO
Romeo will answer it.
MERCUTIO
Any man that can write may answer a letter.
BENVOLIO
Nay, he will answer the letter's master, how he
dares, being dared.
MERCUTIO
Alas poor Romeo! he is already dead; stabbed with a
white wench's black eye; shot through the ear with a
love-song; the very pin of his heart cleft with the
blind bow-boy's butt-shaft: and is he a man to
encounter Tybalt?
BENVOLIO
Why, what is Tybalt?
MERCUTIO
More than prince of cats, I can tell you. O, he is
the courageous captain of compliments. He fights as
you sing prick-song, keeps time, distance, and
proportion; rests me his minim rest, one, two, and
the third in your bosom: the very butcher of a silk
button, a duellist, a duellist; a gentleman of the
very first house, of the first and second cause:
ah, the immortal passado! the punto reverso! the
hai!
BENVOLIO
The what?
MERCUTIO
The pox of such antic, lisping, affecting

fantastmines; these new tuners of accents! 'By Jesu,

a very good blade! a very tall man! a very good
whore!' Why, is not this a lamentable thing,
grandsire, that we should be thus afflicted with
these strange flies, these fashion-mongers, these
perdona-mi's, who stand so much on the new form,
that they cannot at ease on the old bench? O, their
bones, their bones!

Here comes Romeo, here comes Romeo.

SCENE IV. A street.
Enter BENVOLIO and MERCUTIO
Mercutio
Where the heck is Romeo? Did he not come home last night?
Benvolio
He is at his fathers house. I spoke to his father.

Mercutio
Can you not just call him?
Benvolio
He refuses to answer.
Mercutio
Rosaline is a hard hearted wench. She's going to drive him insane.
Benvolio
Tybalt, the nephew of old Capulet, sent a letter to Romeo's fathers house.
Mercutio
I bet you $5 its a challenge.
Benvolio
A challenge that he will accept.
Mercutio
Anyone who can write could answer a letter. Who writes letters now anyways? Why
not an e-mail, or a text message?
Benvolio
I dont know. But Romeo will fight Tybalt. He will be enraged at being dared.
Mercutio
Well, Romeo is as good as dead stabbed by the white wench's black eye, shot
through the ear with a love song, and pierced through the heart by Cupid's bow. He is no
match for Tybalt.
Benvolio
Why? How good is Tybalt?
Mercutio
He is better than anyone. He fights in the way you would sing, keeping time,
distance, and proportion, as well as being on key. He knows when to break: one, two, and
the third to your heart. He is the master of dueling, a man from the very best. He knows the
forward thrust, the backhand thrust, and the thrust that will go through your heart.
Benvolio
He knows what now?
Mercutio
Oh, I hate these crazy foreigners who use their foreign phrases. I hate their weird
accents. I hate it when they say, Oy! Look at this top blade. Jolly good it is. And look, it cost
bugger all. Ill take it! Cheerio! Why should we have to put up with these foreigners? These
outcast, these polite and well-mannered people, who cant just sit down on a bench without
crying over how their bones ache.
Benvolio
What did that have to do with Tybalt?
Enter ROMEO
Benvolio
Oh, look, Romeo is coming.
