Constructivists believe that people gain knowledge and meaning through direct interaction and
experiences. Therefor, each persons learning is unique. From a teaching perspective, building on
children's prior knowledge is key. So when von Glasersfeld states " to assess the truth of your
knowledge you would have to know what you come to know before you come to know it" He is
saying that we must use what we already know and our experiences to gain understanding and
grow intellectually. When learners know how they came to an answer or why then they are
taking ownership over their learning therefor scaffolding and actively drawing their own
conclusions which creates a much more meaningful learning experience, one they will remember
and truly understand. As educators we must remember that each student brings a unique
background therefor everyones learning is unique in their own individual way.
When von Glasersfeld writes, it appears that knowledge is not a transferable commodity and
communication not a conveyance he is saying that knowledge cannot be passed from person to
person through lecturing, it needs to be consequential and everyone needs the opportunity to
create and build on their own cognition. He is demonstrating that everything needs to have
meaning, and that meaning can take many different shapes, forms or memories based on the
individual. Learners need to think in order to learn, and by thinking they are drawing on their
own definition and interpretation.
In conclusion, von Glasersfeld is merely explaining that knowledge comes from an accumulation
of students experiences as well as interpretation rather than by instruction spouted from a
teacher. . The importance is in the freedom to come to individual conclusions and feed off
personal understandings. Meaning builds knowledge.
