Their rich colour warms her spirit just as the rays of the sun warm the earth. The late-blooming chrysanthemum carries the spirit of higher wisdom in its petals andis a symbol of balance and hope. This is an intricate design that features many colours, threads and beads to achieve the beautiful overall effects. It does require some careful planning before you start stitching just to make it easier when you begin. There are several elements, such as the swirls of champagne coloured beads around the fairy, which are spaced away from the majority of the stitching. Therefore you need to count carefully when working these, if you go wrong they won't flow as evenly. It really helps if you tack gridlines across and down your fabric, about 20 squares apart. Mark these corresponding lines on the chart to make your counting easier. Stitching the design Start stitching in the centre of the design to make sure you position it correctly on the fabric. If you have tacked gridlines then you could count outwards from this point to start stitching at the top if you prefer. All the cross stitch is worked in two strands of stranded cotton over two threads of the evenweave fabric. The cross stitches worked in metallic thread are stitched in just one strand of Kreinik Very Fine Braid. Make sure you only use short lengths of this, no more than 12in (31cm), or the thread will separate and tangle. Buying... beads Seed beads can be bought in a choice of sizes; the ones used in this design are Mill Hill seed beads, which are actually a size 11. If you can't find these and want to buy another make, then choose a size 11 as they are the same size as one whole cross stitch is on 28HPI evenweave. You can buy smaller and larger seed beads than this, which are ideal if you use a different count fabric. Adding the backstitch details When you have finished all the cross stitch you can add the backstitch details, using one strand of stranded cotton; medium copper for some of the face and body details; brown for the rest of the face, body and clothing and dark wine for the fairy’s lips. Use one strand of Kreinik Very Fine Braid to work the backstitch in topaz for the clothing details and confetti gold for all the other outlines and details. 10 ColléCtion June 2011 Attaching the beads There are three colours of seed beads used in this design; golden olive, cognac and champagne ice. They are attached to the fabric when all the other stitching is finished. Use a thread which matches the fabric or the cross stitches underneath, if they are to be attached over these. Work a half cross stitch through the bead, making sure that the bead doesn't sag on the fabric by working a couple of tiny backstitches behind it to hold it tight. Next issue... Coincidentally, | have just come across two bird books that | must share with you. The first is called The Artful Bird by Abigail Patner Glassenberg (Search Press, ISBN 9781596682382, £17.99) and is a wonderful collection of ‘feathered friends to make and sew’. The book shows you how to make a variety of stuffed, quilted, sculptured and appliquéd birds from fabric. It explains the basic techniques used, so you can create your own birds as well as a choice of 16 bird patterns. The penguin is adorable and | love the author's idea to make a fabric egg to put on its feet! These birds aren't toys though — they are beautiful decorative pieces to grace any home and are sure to keep still when you get closer to admire them. The second book, just called Birds, is from the wonderful Tilda series by Tone Finnanger Boas ese sesssiweeeence a eeneeesssesesses ee eccccceseserceeceee and comes as part of a box set of four themed books called The Tilda Characters Collection == (David and Charles, ISBN 9780715338155, £14.99). Fold it in half both ways to find this point and mark it with a pin. If you are stitching the ‘angel in the making’ photo design, the area you need to cut out to insert your ultrasound scan photo is marked with a line, so leave this area unstitched. Stitching the designs All the cross stitch is worked in two strands of either stranded cotton or DMC Light Effects thread. Refer to the key to see where to place each of the colours. The larger picture is worked on evenweave and each cross stitch is worked over two threads of the fabric. If you are working the photo frame or the journal cover, then work each cross stitch over one thread on aida. You can, of course, work any of the designs on aida or evenweave, as the finished design size will be the same — just choose whichever fabric you prefer to work on. Adding the details When you have finished working all the cross stitch you can add the backstitch details. These are all worked in one strand of stranded cotton or DMC Light Effects thread and over two threads of the evenweave fabric or one thread of the aida. There are six different colours of backstitch used in the design, so refer to the key to see which one to use where. The backstitch lines are shown on the chart by different coloured lines. > Little angel DMC Anchor Madeira Cross stitch in two strands Colour 632 986 p 926 2101_—Lightcream HH 738 885 2013 Darkeream min 739 366 __20!4_ Medium eream _ 3 1001 Blue — 2005 __Verydarksepia 271 O50l_—s~Pink 3 3 og. wo} 13064 882 2312—Dustypink 3756 1037 2504 Paleblue @ 3772 1007. 2311 Mediumsepia HHL OMCLightEfectsE3821 Backstitch in one strand — *632 936 2007 Dark sepia alphabet and numbers, baby feet and ‘angel in the making’ frame outlines and details —642 392 2112 Olive wings and clothing outlines and i — 779 360 2005 hand and baby face details — 3781 905 2003 ___ head and face outlines — 3864 376 1910 nai Jo Se ou. — *DMC Light Effects E3821 Staroutline Very dark sepia Brown Very light sepia Stitching guide === Use as a guide for cutting an aperture for the small ‘angel in the making’ photo frame ‘Stitched using DMC threads on 28HPI evenweave — over two threads Picture stitch count 133x105 Design area 9¥2x7¥ain (24x19cm) Stitched using DMC threads on 14HPI aida Photo frame stitch count 75x74 Design area 5Y%4x5\4in (14x13cm) Journal stitch count 79x48 Design area S%4xo%in (4xScm) *indicates colour is listed earlier in the key Visit online at www.crossstitcher magazine.co.uk to download a free chart {in PDF format) of this wonderful extra design by Maria of two mothers with their little angels and one mother-to-be SE iad OD aera ue I acne | a a TITTLE PEELE PEELE TL a ial ri rT + TrltittTrttt tT fTTttttfsfh eT PP ee 4. ai i 0} 0/0} talatot tt ololo; oO t ofoln ao Ante! ofoinin oO} i 0 nop fofolo CEccr oe t tt oH Olx[Bin}ofolo} £ i} Tololofo Lo T Olx[Alofolole] ololojolojoink ofolo non Info Lofo[a Oinin Torn [o i (O00 TE 0 olpfofofo! jo T | T i Oo} ofoln inialn}oro lolalnre n XX fololo foyo oy ina [3 nl [ole n a 10 in / ia ia a A 0) Ox x) | AEX oy XIX bab Ni x/x nin{xlx! rx nin xinlx Topo | olojo oO | xX/xjo ic Jj i ooo ololoo) ofofo inn on x X{X|x ON x x ofolo 0 Afolo a ofololo ofolofofofo 0 xO ee - ! | ° XiX|X|Xix x|ojo|0)0 XO OO OO: Ainfo|A ofolo ,o,o { yo | ojo t L i ; jofofoiatninixizinin of ojo; ooo folio alo alo 0 ola ofo| ofo ofo} | polo tated }olo; j.8 1 0019) folo}o 1940 fa x|x Xxx) = T Xx esis x T | Oo i010 O/Xix lolol} Ti fofololofolofololololololojojo} Tolofofelofojojoto OOO OO Ooo ololol OOlojc Inia |x| X/x/x x|0) fia ol ofofolololol oo oto info oo o x ; { (x/x|o] babel [nx x(x) Tx] x]x]x! ny ix ae x X/x/x/x/0/0 A x]x/x xf ix [xf x Olx/x|x Cx] x [x x/x/x/x/x ao Doo ooox ooo aC OOO OOO |x X|x fofofo ofofololo I | + alo | lz X|X|O/xX/O)x/x/o}x im x) ole X/O}X) x |X| x = FOO ooo e) LX] x|0 x iO/X[X} oo} X{K|xin 0 ot OOO RX X[X[ololololololo[nioloinix o[ojololo clol G04 0 IXiMjofolojojolojolol Be Ooo oo O}o|x loo lolx ‘clo ovwooo Ix ax [xix X/NIN[x X/x(N/k/x Oo ool fofofofoin ag Ojolo} xx OO) xX/x/x/x X/X/X/n/x Blo) x|x/x/x X/xX/X/x [xix x T | T ooo Cx [x(x |x [xin] bal X/DIC oe ololo jo |Xjo Tojofo | al { ofofo (x [3 i yt 0] x| = pd babs o[Ain eye aoa. ofofojojolololo olo a x/O T i ee. | 4 je 0} Jo;ojojofojojo} ojojolo ofol 1x (xo OOO x x x] 'd olooo OOO! x|x|x K/xX|0 O}X/x|x vio) OO) x/x/x/x|x/)x [Olo; (O10) é O10 ojololo Olx g}x(o/0/3 10) XI ng Nino ininix|nleizleh jojolfojojofo [xix Xxx [x [x]x] ed A (x [Olx/o/o0 folg] &/e/ 3/3) R/O Z/z/O [ni xp x0 ololojo 01x10) folo : Ajo in x io} 0 xix ORR /3/x bate Ain x iofyio oy lw K/0/KiX Kolo |n|x x[nlofoinix ofofofofofofolo XInfolo al [X]o ix fofojofolo ee ofofololol[o ofofol | fofofo! This is a low count fabric so your stitches will be bold and chunky, which is perfect for the lavender design. Count the fabric threads carefully to begin with to make sure you work your cross stitches over two threads, then after a while you will get used to stitching these larger stitches.
