Initial Liberations:

I. Bar Harbor August 1963

The jumping out of bed

Quilts and visions in the dark
Of night impulsively abandoned
A city boy seeking fresh
The layers of a day

Drifting down by docks each doubtfully

Upheld by lenient pilings
They that merge uncertainly
With the stirring chloride sea

Some movement in the sunrise setting

The overture of those
Who reap but do not sow
Their dragnet boats put in
Before the waters wake
To make the requisite objections

The island mountains give

The scene skyward punctuation
All airy opposite of ocean
Province of protracted rhythms
Well above the tide
Stillness leads them still to stay
Beneath their foggy blankets
Despite the hour
