Assignment #3

Safety Brochure / Pamphlet

20 marks

This years Sheridan College motto is Be Creative. Assignment #3 will reflect Creativity. You are to
work in a team of three (3) students. The team shall CREATE and DESIGN a SAFETY
BROCHURE / Pamphlet. Please include how each topic would relate to your future career in
engineering.
The audience for this assignment is your Health and Safety Class. The purpose of this assignment is to
create a brochure that informs students about a particular subject through the use of both written and
visual texts.
Submissions may include diagrams and pictures depicting the subjects may enhance the document.
Quality of information will have a higher value attached to the document than quantity of information.
The assignment is due at the beginning of class Nov 24, 2014. Do not email the information. Make
sure names of the team, student numbers and class number are on the assignment.
Your Topic:

Working in cold environments


The presentation shall include the following:

Explanation of Cold stress and explain safety concerns

briefly review biological response to cold,


briefly review common health effects due to cold exposure (frostbite, differentiate
between levels of hypothermia)
environmental factors relevant to cold exposure wind chill and temperature
Prevention and control strategies to exposure to cold; consider at the source, along the path, at
the worker (personal protective equipment, safety equipment, engineering controls.
Cold stress in relation to your career in engineering

Your brochure must include:


Title of your brochure / pamphlet (on the front)
A brief explanation of why knowledge of your topic is important; a few sentences
The brochure / pamphlet should be creative and colorful. Make them eye-catching and easy to understand.
Diagrams or pictures may be used to help explain the topic.
Procedure:
1) Page set-up: landscape paper size: 8.5 by 11
2) There should be three folds (three sections). There should be six panels; three panels on each side.

3) Written material is to be single spaced / may be in point form


4) At least two different type fonts are to be used one for headings perhaps and another for the text
beneath the heading. Use type fonts that reflect your assignment

5) Front Panel: This should have the title, name of the student, and basic information about the
topic. A picture, clip art or small piece of artwork about the topic is a nice addition.
6) Other Five Panels: Display information with subtitles, pictures, clip art, and designs.
7) Students should decide what main information they want to display and tell about their topics
8) It is important that you paraphrase rather than directly quote any source you might use.
9) When you design your brochure, youll need to keep mind how people will unfold it so that the
panels will work together.
10) You are to include a reference page that will be separate from the brochure. The reference
should include all the sources you used. If those were web sites, include the URL. Dont forget to
include the sources of the visual images you use. Please do not use vague/orphan references; only
authentic references will be acceptable. Stay away from Wikipedia or google images. Include
references of at least TWO books; include authors name, title, page numbers, edition,
publisher name while quoting references. Please respect academic honesty, and do not copy.
Your work must reflect originality.
Accuracy: All information is correct and all of the sources are listed
Neatness: All writing is tidy, photos and artwork are precisely placed, and all sections are orderly
Creativity/Effort: The brochure as a whole is interesting, engaging, imaginative, and original
Colorful: The brochure is eye catching and vibrant and/or coordinated colors are used
Organization:
Points to ponder about your pamphlet / a check list for your pamphlet
identifies main ideas (thesis) and key points of the subject
is unified, coherent, and logical
contains a minimum of three appropriate visual images
maintains a balance between visual and written material
has panels that work well together
presents the material in an eye-appealing manner
appropriately paraphrases or summarizes sources
contains few, if any, major errors
includes a reference page

Grading Criteria: The brochure will be marked using a rubric marking form. The following will be
considered:

Creativity
Organization
