BTR Questions 1
1. When McDougall is sitting in the hotel waiting for Caballo Blanco he starts to wonder whether or
not he is real. What makes him think he is just part of a made up story? Why does he not give up
looking for him when he suspects that Caballo Blanco is a myth?
2. McDougall describes the Tarahumara Tribe houses as hidden when he wrote, The hill was
actually a small hut, fashioned from mud bricks and contoured into the hillside so that it was
invisible until you were literally on top of it (26). Where do most Tarahumaras live? Why do you
think the Tarahumara Tribe tries to stay away from civilization and even from each other?

In Born to Run the author McDougall describes that the Tarahumara Tribe members like to
isolated and away from civilization. The Tarahumara Tribe lives in Mexico near mountains and deserts in
very difficult places for people to get to.
When McDougall and Salvador finally found Arnulfo, a Tarahumara Tribe member, McDougall
explains that, I took another look around to see if Id missed any other camouflaged homes, but there
wasn't a hint of another human in any direction (26). Their houses are so hidden that only they know
where they are. There must be a reason why Tarahumara members dont like to live near anyone. They
might have lived with people before and treated poorly that they decided to move away from everyone in
hidden places. They could have also decided that if they lived far away from each other it would be harder
for people to find them and if one of them is found everyone else would not be threatened by civilization.
They could have also seen no need to be near everyone since all they do all day is run and not really
interact with other people.
