Conducting

Elmira Concert March


Concept or Skill: Students will learn how to play in an ensemble by
working together to produce a quality reproduction of a piece.
Grade Level: High School/College wind ensemble
Materials Needed: baton, score, and parts for musicians
Objectives: Students will be able to perform the Elmira Concert March
without many mistakes and with musicality.
New York State Standard:
Standard 1: Creating, Performing, and Participating in the Arts
NAfME Standard:
Standard 2: Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied
repertoire of music
Procedure:
Preparation:
1.
Students will warm up by playing a Db major scale, as this
is the key of the Elmira Concert March.
2.
Any pitch errors will be noted and addressed.
Development:
1.
Students will follow the conductor in playing a run through
of the Elmira Concert March.
2.
Conductor will make note of certain musical suggestions
and will address them specifically.
3.
Students will rehearse the Elmira Concert March in sections
in order to apply said suggestions.
4.
Conductor will ask if there are any more
questions/suggestions to the piece.
5.
Students will give feedback as to what could be added
musically or will clarify any improvement in tone, articulations,
etc.

6.
Conductor will continue addressing student inquiries as
well as adding a few stylistic changes until the last few minutes
of the session.
Assessment:
1. Conductor's Assessment: The conductor will give his views
on how the piece went and some general points to keep
into consideration for the ensemble in the future.
2. Self Assessment: The conductor will ask the students
what they thought of the piece. Also, the conductor will ask
for strong/weak points in the ensemble as well as from the
conductor himself.
