2.0: TSO WELD SYMBOLS «is Se ii ‘This standard prescribes the rules to be used to show welded joints on drawings. 21 General Beloit Paper Group (BPG) will use weld symbols rather than using other more complicated means of showing welding requirements on drawings. ‘A.weld symbol shall clearly give all necessary information regarding the specific joint to be obtained without over- Dburdening the drawing with notes or showing additional views. However, there will be times when detail views of a weld are required A weld symbol includes an elementary symbol that may be completed with a supplementary symbol, dimensions, or some ‘complementary indications (particularly for production drawings). BPG has chosen to simplify our drawings by having separate instructions and specifications that detail the preparation ofthe Weld joint and welding process for a given weld. Therefore, this information is not required on drawings, 2.2 Symbols 2.24 Elementary Symbols ‘The various categories of weld joints are characterized by an elementary symbol that is similar to the shape of the weld. The elementary weld symbol shall not dictate the welding procedure or process to be used to produce the weld. Elementary weld symbols are shown in Table 2.1 ‘When it is necessary to show how a joint is to be welded but weld specifications are not to be given, use the symbol shown in Figure 2.1. (See Figures 2.12 and 2.13.) ‘The number of times a particular weld is to be repeated may be specified two ways. Both methods require a note bubble. The ‘method to be use depends on: «How complicated the fabrication is. «How big the fabrication is. © How many different weld specifications are given on the drawing, ‘The number of times a weld is to be repeated may be given directly in a note bubble when the fabrication meets the following conditions «Relatively simple (Le. generally five or less parts) Medium size (ic. about 2.5 m? or smaller) + Few weld specifications on the drawing (i.e. generally two) (See Figure 2.12, the second option.) ‘Only use this method if it is absolutely clear which weld is required at which location, If there is any doubt, use the second ‘method. ‘The note method of specifying how many times to repeat a weld is with a note as shown in Figures 2.12 and 2.13. The note ‘method should be used if there isthe slightest chance that a welder may not understand the type and location of welds using the quantity method. Do not use notes such as, “2x,” or “TYPICAL,” as they are of little value to a welder. Use notes that include a location as well as a quantity.
