THE THREE

RS

CONCEPT
The

three Rs of ecologyor just3Ris a

proposal on consumer habits, popularized by
the organizationenvironmentalistGreenpeace,
which aims to develop habits such
asresponsible consumption.

This

concept

strategies

refers
for

management

to
waste

looking

to

become more environmentally

sustainable

and

specifically

give priority to reducing the

volume of waste generated.

ORIGIN
During

the Summit of theG8 in June 2004, the first

Minister of Japan,Junichiro Koizumi, presented the

three Rs Initiative seeks to build a society
orientedrecycling.In April 2005 took place a
meeting of ministers in which discussed with the
United States, Germany, France and 20 other
countries how they can be implemented
internationally actions related to the three Rs.

TheThree Rs(3R) by bioecological importance are:

REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE

REDUCE
Ifwe

reducethe problem, we reduce the

impact on the environment. The reduction can

be performed at 2 levels: reducing
theconsumptionof goods orenergy.

In

fact, the production of

energy currently produces

numerous wastes (nuclear waste,
carbon dioxide...).

The

goal would be:

1.

Reducing or eliminating the amount of

material intended for a single use (for
example, packaging).

2.

Adapt equipment according to their needs.

(example put washers and dishwashers full
and not half load).

3.

Reduce energy losses or resources: water,

electrical appliances offstandby, efficient
driving, disconnectingtransformers, etc.

REUSE
This

is based onreusean object to give it a

second life. All materials or property can have

more than one life, either fixing them for the
same use or imagination to a different use.

1.

Examples:

Disposable bottles can be turned into green

bricks, if they put all the plastic bags that are no
longer used inside.

2.

The boxes or bottles of metal or plastic can be

painted or decorated and reused to store various
elements now.

3.

Used paper can be transformed into pulp and

create new pages for writing.

RECYCLE
This

is one of theRmost popular

because thesystem current
consumptionis preferred to use
recyclable packaging materials
(plastics and bricks, especially), but
notbiodegradable.

This

employment requires more

personally and energy in the

process.
Example:

The glass and most

plastics can be recycled by heating
them until they melt and giving a
new form.
