Student Responsibilities
o Demonstrate respect and responsibility on a daily basis when interacting with

o Let Ms. Fasterling (or another teacher) know as soon as a problem or conflict
arises that cannot be solved independently.
o Read at home on a consistent basis to help build literacy skills.

o Have a safe and fun year in second grade!
Parent/Family Responsibilities
o Ensure that your child is at school on time and remains at school for the full day.
o Ensure that your child has received enough sleep each night in order to be
ready for learning every morning (10 11 hours).
o Discuss questions/concerns with Ms. Fasterling as soon as they arise.
o Maintain high expectations for your childs academic and behavioral success.
o Help your child to establish a consistent reading routine at home.

HOMEWORK: WHAT TO EXPECT

Nightly reading
o Research consistently shows that the early elementary years are a crucial period
for developing literacy skills, and 2nd grade is an especially important time for
making sure students are on track when it comes to reading proficiency. For this
reason and many, many others, students will be expected to read at home for
at least 100 minutes every week. This can be accomplished however is most
convenient for your family, such as:
o 15 minutes a day Monday - Sunday (7 days a week)
o 20 minutes a day Monday - Friday (5 days a week)
o 30 minutes a day Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (3 days a week)
o Meeting this reading goal can include silent reading by your child, having your
child read a story to you, reading a story to your child, or a combination of all
three. The goal with this assignment is for students to be engaged in reading
outside of school on a regular basis, so the way in which you accomplish this
goal is up to you!
o If you need additional reading materials please do not hesitate to ask!
Math/Spelling/Other Homework
o Students will receive a homework packet every Monday containing a reading
log and practice activities that focus on skills we are working on in class. Most
weeks, the packets will include our class spelling words to practice at home for
our spelling tests on Fridays. When finished, packets need to be signed by a
parent or guardian and are due on Friday of the same week.
** Please keep in mind that the ultimate goal of homework in 2nd grade is to help
students develop a responsible and independent homework routinenot to
teach them new skills. You can help your child form a responsible homework
routine by setting aside and enforcing a scheduled time each day for
homework completion (e.g. right after school, before dinner, after dinner,
before getting to watch T.V., etc.). Packet activities should not take more than
15 minutes each night (not including reading!), which should leave plenty of
time for relaxing and enjoying time with family and friends J

OUR DISCIPLINE PLAN:

Students and I will spend a considerable amount of time in August and
September establishing procedures, routines, and behavioral expectations for our
classroom, as well as building a community based on trust, respect, and responsibility.
When incidents occur that do not meet our classs expectations or follow our set
procedures, I will handle them on a case-by-case basis depending on the situation. As
much as possible, students will receive meaningful consequences to their actions that
require them to resolve any conflicts that they were involved in creating. For example,
if a student writes on a table he/she will be expected to clean off the table. Or, if a
student rips a book on purpose, he/she will be expected to return the book to working
condition (e.g. tape it back together).
In addition to meaningful consequences, a key component of my management
plan is independencethroughout the year students will be taught how, and then
encouraged, to resolve conflicts with their classmates without teacher direction. This
might take the form of talking through a situation with a classmate during an
appropriate time, writing an apology letter, or giving a student space and time to cool
down, all of which work towards the goal of increasing the students independence
and self confidence.

Parent Contact: I will always contact parents regarding student behavior under
the following circumstances:
o A minor behavioral incident has been occurring repeatedly in the
classroom and has not improved due to teacher interventions.
o A major behavioral incident has occurred and needs to be discussed
promptly.
o A specific incident occurs with a child that his/her parent has expressed
an interest in being kept informed about.

Fun Fridays: At the end of each week, students who completed all their assignments
and worked cooperatively with others may bring one non-electronic toy from home to
play with during afternoon recess. Students planners will be signed the day before to
let you know if your child may bring a toy the following day. Please do not allow your
child to bring a toy to school that is fragile or expensive (accidents happen!),
inappropriate (e.g. a toy weapon), or not to be shared with others.
