Should Turkey be able to join the EU?

Pros
The Turkish economy is growing rapidly.
Key pipelines bring oil and gas from
Asia.
Turkish population is young and
increasingly well- educated.
Strong military tradition and large
armed forces military asset for Europe.
Turkey has already responded to the
EUs demand for change.
It has eliminated the death penalty.

Cons
Culturally Turkey is not European.
Granting EU membership to Turkey
would mean allowing a wave of Turkish
immigrants into Europe.
Turkey is not rich enough yet to join the
EU.
Turkey refuses to recognize the
Armenian Genocide of 1915.
It is an Islamic nation which would not
fit into the EU Christian Club.

a. How is immigration a problem for the EU?

The European Union has been facing the problem with the influx of citizens
form former soviet states and their former colonies and have been trying to
curb this influx. They tried to put pressure on other member and non-member
states of Europe that have been a source of the problem. There has also been
cases of illegally migrating into other European countries like Spain from the
North African country of Morocco. The issue of deporting people residing in
the EU illegally is also a major problem for Otto Schily.
b. How is immigration being controlled?
The Swedish government does not want to restrict the movement of immigrants
through the borders. They believe all of the labor will help develop the Swedish
government. But governments like Britain, Germany, and French have called for
tighter border controls. This trio is the main way of controlling the influx of
immigrants. Under European Union legislation on immigration, immigrants are
required to apply for asylum as their first point of entry.
