In Plaster

I am assigned an extract from the poem In Plaster by Sylvia Plath. This poem represents a duality
and relationship which are the most important and evident theme represented within the poem.
One of the main themes of this poem is duality. This can be seen from the title of the poem itself
which is In Plaster,. The plaster may be a symbol of the false identity as it is an unnatural or
artificial attatchment to oneself. Similarly, the narrator of the poem may have a false identity on the
outside in order to protect his/her true or real identity. This idea of double-identity is also seen from
the caesura I shall never get out of this! These are two of me now,. A caesura represents a cut or
break within a line which might enfold an idea from another idea. I shall never get out of this! is an
exclamation. An exclamation is used whenever a particular phrase or line needs to said out loud.
By exclaiming the phrase I shall never get out of this the narrator is expressing that there will
always be permanently two personas to her. This is followed by a caesura and the phrase, These
are two of me now,. This continues the idea of their being a struggle between one persona and
another by there being a reference to tow
apostrophes are used-> to create an impact on the reader
Personal pronouns such as she and I
concealed intention of involving the reader
sadistic phrases are used
syntax of man of the sentences in the poem-> disordered
->Living with her was like living with my own coffin

Another idea of this poem is relationship.

I shall ever get out of this! There are two of me now.->begins with
This new absolutely white person and the old yellow one.

The white person or plaster of the poem is the false self which is the superior one.
I gave rger a soul, I bloomed out of her as a rose,->similie

> one day I shall manage without her.
