MEN IN BLUE RULE !

With two consecutive - and equally big - wins, the team has won the hearts of cricket fans across the world and shattered
a long-standing jinx
Paula Ray

23-year-old jinx was

broken last Sunday,
when India defeated
South Africa by 130 runs at the
ICC Cricket World Cup 2015
match. What made this win even
more commendable is the fact
that Team India registered two
consecutive wins the first one
being against arch rivals, the
Pakistan cricket team.
As compliments poured in
from all quarters, the buzz was no
less in our own Aotearoa either.
The FanZone set up in downtown
Auckland - or even the one at
Christchurch - was choc-a-bloc
with cricket aficionados. The
Council of both the cities have
been preparing well for the World
Cup and the results were seen
in the form a mammoth digital
screen and eco-friendly portable
seating arrangements.

The pub around town or even

the fast food outlets did not want
to miss out on the opportunity.
They used this as an excuse to
rope in more customers the
screens across the restaurants

and pubs screening the matches.

Some pubs have even put their
screens outside for crowds to
gather around them and partake
in the merriment.
The stage seems to be ready for

wish it, dream it, do it!

India overpower South Africa at the MCG

Red

Veturi Srivatsa

t is natural to go ga-ga over

Indias victory over South
Africa at the MCG Sunday
- because this is the first time
they have beaten the Proteas in a
World Cup match after losing at
all their three previous meetings.
Yet, to disprove the critics,
Team India has done everything
they looked incapable of doing
just a month ago. They batted
beautifully, bowled purposefully
and were amazingly athletic in
the field. Otherwise, it is well nigh
impossible to beat the Proteas
by 130 runs and that too in a key
World Cup game that may as well
decide who tops the group.
To win back-to-back matches
so convincingly is no joke and the
Indians kept up the momentum
so well. Playing Pakistan drains
an Indian team and then to be
taking on South Africa can be
further demanding.
The big revelation was the way
the fast bowlers fielded. First,
Shami took a splendidly welljudged catch on the boundary
off Mohit Sharma who also got
top-scorer Faf du Plessis to make
sure the South Africans have no
pretensions of a late fightback.
Then the turning point in the
match when Mohits brilliant
throw from the outfield ran AB

de Villiers out. The pick up and

release of the ball was so quick
and precise that MS Dhoni had to
just give the finishing touch.
As if thats not enough, Umesh
Yadav showed the strength of
his throwing arm to get rid of
another dangerous batsman
David Miller, who had bailed the
side out along with JP Duminy
against Zimbabwe -- both scoring
hundreds.
The two run-outs effected by
the two pace bowlers shows that
the Indian fielding has gone up

by a notch or two and, as Dhoni

said in his post-match comments,
they made his life easy in
implementing team plans and not
worry about hiding slowcoaches.
Not many may have noticed that
all 10 Pakistani batsmen were out
to catches at Adelaide.
Shikhar Dhawan and Virat
Kohli continued their rebuilding
work from the Pakistan match
after Rohit Sharma was unlucky
to be run out with de Villiers
finding one stump to aim good
enough.

Shikhar
found
Ajinkya
Rahane, who came in to bat in
the 50th over against Pakistan,
in a more belligerent mood. His
phenomenal strike rate (79 off 60
balls) gave India a 300-plus total
to breathe easy. Whats pleasing
about Rahane is that, like Rahul
Dravid and VVS Laxman, he looks
so graceful playing cricketing
shots -- not for him the ungainly
slogging. Moreover, he looks as
assured as Kohli at the wicket to
calm the dressing room.
Dhawan, who was struggling to

Black

Orange

get into the line to middle the ball,

made some course correction -as he himself said after the match
-- and suddenly he looks in good
nick. Come to think of it, quite a
few thought Murali Vijay should
have been retained sending the
Delhi southpaw back.
India beat South Africa in the
2013 Champions Trophy and
Dhawan scored a century then,
too. The MCG victory is Indias
third biggest win against South
Africa.
Dhawan, whose family resides
in Melbourne, batted as if he
has been playing his cricket all
through at the MCG. His driving
and pulling were impeccable on
this day. He and Kohli ran well
too to unsettle the field.
South Africa, who have never
won a World Cup match chasing
more than 260-odd runs, found
the Indian bowlers not in an
obliging mood. What many
people do not seem to realise is
that Umesh Yadav and Shami are
as pacy as the best in the business
elsewhere but they are not
overbearing as the others -- they
are highly effective nevertheless.
The South African crash was
sudden and swift. The dismissal
of de Villers seemed to have
unnerved the batsmen who
followed him. After his exit,
the match was over in the next

10 overs or so when the Proteas lost six

wickets for 48 runs.
Red There was worryBlack

that India would
not
be able to strike in the middle overs. This
day, however, Ashwin, Jadeja and Mohit
not only contained the batsmen bowling
a perfect line, they also got wickets. The
off-spinner claimed three and it was
coming after his tight bowling against the
Pakistanis.
Importantly, Team India has found
their team composition right straightaway.
Playing with five bowlers and Dhoni
batting at six is no longer a worry. The
South Africans are in a dilemma whether
they should think of playing a seventh
batsman as they found their tail too long
for their comfort.
The 86,876 spectators who turned up
at the MCG -- an overwhelming majority

of them Indians -- partied inside the

historical venue and perhaps well into the
wee hours of the new week.

rime Minister John Key

Tuesday confirmed that
New Zealand will deploy
143 NZ Defence Force personnel
to fight against the Islamic State
(IS) terror group in Iraq.
The announcement to the
parliament said the governments
controversial proposal to deploy
a military training mission to
Iraq is part of New Zealands
overall contribution to the
international anti-IS coalition.
Key said that New Zealands
military personnel would fulfil a
non-combat behind-the-wire
mission to train Iraqi security
forces so they are better prepared
to fight the IS.
In return we expect to see
genuine effort in Iraq to move
towards a law-abiding democratic
country that treats all of its
citizens with respect, he said.
New Zealand military personnel
would be deployed at the Taji
Military Complex, north of
Baghdad.
The New Zealand government
would retain ultimate decisionmaking authority over the two-

year mission, which would be

reviewed by the cabinet after nine
months.
Defence
Minister
Gerry
Brownlee said the training would
cover a broad range of individual
and organizational military skills,
including basic weapons skills,
individual and unit military skills
to prepare for combat operations,
as well as other skills such as
medical support and logistics.
Staff officers would begin
taking up their posts in the region
in March to help with preparations
for the main deployment in May.

Taranaki.
Organised by the Taranaki
Arts Festival Trust the festival
will be held at the TSB Bowl of

from March 13 to 15.
Meeta is the granddaughter
and disciple of Padma Bhushan
Pt Krishna Rao Shankar Pandit,
the doyen of Northern Indian
Classical music in the 20th

As such, she upholds a vital
200-year-old family tradition
of elite singers, through six
unbroken generations and has
the unique distinction of being
the first woman musician in the
family.
Her melodious yet robust voice
stretches over three octaves a
talent tested through especially
difficult and challenging material,

yet her intricate handling of ragas

has won critical acclaim.
The rendering of traditional
but increasingly rare Tappa is
one of the sublime offerings in
her concerts. Besides the styles
of Khayal and Tappa, Meeta is
equally adept with genres of
Tarana, Bhajan, Thumri, Sufi and
cross-cultural music.
Her performance embraces a
cultural blend of instruments, as
Meeta is accompanied by Akhtar
Hasan on tabla and Bharat

Beyond performing extensively
at prestigious festivals around the
world, Meeta has emerged as a

The Parade started at 7.30pm, from

The theme for the Auckland Pride Parade

New
Zealanders are missing
out on NZ Super while
over 70,000immigrants receive
NZ Super after only 10 years, says
New Zealand First.
Its unfair that there is a
group of New Zealanders who
have worked and paid taxes for
decades but are denied NZ Super

Hon Winston Peters.
Compare this to about 5000
older immigrants who enter each
year under the parent reunion

required to work and pay taxes
but get full NZ Super at 65.
New Zealand First is calling for
changes so residents of the Cook

lived at least five years in New
Zealand after the age of 50 to be
eligible.
Many have already gone
back to their island countries,
or Kiwis have retired there, but
they are forced to return to New

This is disruptive to families and
emotionally draining.
The irony is that we should
be encouraging senior New

retire in the islands to keep the
economies going, and thus lessen
the reliance on New Zealand aid
funding. The benefits of a warmer
climate would also be a bonus to
our health system.
Mr Peters put New Zealand

this Monday morning, after a
member of public discovered the
body of a woman washed ashore
at Okahu Bay.
Initially, officers attending the
incident said there were no forms
of identification on the woman
and checks did not reveal any
recent reports of a missing person
that fit her description.
But later on, police said
that the information about her
identity came overnight and she

was identified as 53 years old of

Indian descent who lived in Mt
Roskill.
As per the police statement at
the time of print, officers were in
the process of advising next of kin
of her death.
Enquiries are continuing
into the circumstances of her
death but it is not believed to be
suspicious and the matter has
been referred to the Coroner,
said a police statement.

Improving the lives of New Zealanders

Kanwaljit Bakshi
Chair, Law and Order
Select Committee

elivering better public services

to make a real difference to the
lives of New Zealanders is one of
Nationals priorities.
To reinforce our expectations, in 2012
the Prime Minister set 10 specific results
we want to achieve over the next few years.
These are in areas that have been
challenging to governments, not just in
New Zealand but around the world such
as welfare dependency, crime, child

abuse, and educational achievement. Its

pleasing to see the latest six-monthly
update of our Better Public Services
programme shows were making progress
in all areas.
For example, almost 5000 people came
off the long-term Jobseeker Support
benefit in 2014 and the number of
children who experienced substantiated
physical abuse decreased by almost 200,
or 5.6 per cent, over the 12 months to
September 2014. Infant immunisations
are at an all-time high, rheumatic fever
rates have dropped considerably, and
crime numbers continue to fall.
This programme is about challenging
ourselves to do better, on behalf of the
New Zealanders who need the most help,

but also on behalf of taxpayers.

Our challenge now is to keep that
progress going, as we try to help people
who are harder to reach or who find
change more difficult.
This means there will need to be more
cooperation, more new ideas, and more
reaching outside the public sector to
find solutions.
The Government is interested in
doing what works to get results that
change peoples lives for the better.
Were extending three of our targets
because we think we can build on the
momentum we have.
Our aim is to have 75,000 fewer New
Zealanders on benefits by June 2018,
and reduce the long-term cost of benefit

dependency by $13 billion. As weve

already signalled, were changing the
overall crime target to require a 20 per
cent reduction by 2018, replacing the
previous target of a 15 per cent reduction
by 2017, which weve already achieved.
Were also lifting the target to
increase the workforce skills of people
aged 25-34.
Theres still a lot of work to do and
National will continue to focus on
making strides on the things that matter
to New Zealanders and their families.
We know if we can help our vulnerable
get their lives on a more independent
track, therell be real gains not only in
realising their potential, but also in
savings for taxpayers.

is iraq deployment the end of nzs

independent foreign policy?
David Shearer
Labour MP

hen I worked for the UN

in Iraq, US forces were
everywhere. Just their base
at Baghdad airport held more than 40,000
Americans.
Many of them were there to fight
in combat. But there were many there
training the new Iraqi army. Sadly, once
the US left, the army fell apart, torn apart
by political appointments into the officer
ranks, corruption, high numbers of ghost
soldiers soldiers who were there on
paper collecting a salary, but actually never
existed.
Now Mr Key says we can make a
difference by sending our forces into Iraq to
do training. We cant. Whatever we do will
be dominated by the Iraqis themselves. Only
they can fix it.
I dont believe New Zealand troops should
be sent into Iraq. A strong case has not been
made.
The decision whether to send young
women and men into a war zone is one of
the most important and delicate decisions a
leader can make. We must not get it wrong.
John Key and Murray McCully met with
the Iraqi foreign affairs minister, Dr Ibrahim
al-Jaafari recently. After the meeting, they
told waiting media that New Zealand had
been invited to send military personnel to
Iraq to help in the fight against Islamic State.
It was only half true.
Labour Party leader Andrew Little and I
met with Dr Jaafari on the same day.
He told us Iraq would welcome New

Zealands support, but that civilian support

would be equally as welcome as military. It is
up to New Zealand to decide what form our
contribution will take.
He suggested reconstruction, training,
humanitarian support, logistics, capacity
building and agricultural support as areas
in which New Zealand could make a
meaningful difference in Iraq.
Iraqis are very sensitive about boots on
the ground by foreign militaries. They reject
large numbers of foreign troops and have
ruled out military bases being established by
other countries.
Dr Jaafari actually said, We do not want
direct interference on the ground.
He knows theres little likelihood that
a small military contribution from New
Zealand would be able to succeed in Iraq
where $25 billion American dollars and a
decade of effort have failed.
The last thing we should be doing is
sending young New Zealand military
personnel into a country where they are
barely wanted, needed or valued.
So why does John Key want to send them?
Because our larger allies Australia, the
UK and the US - want us to.
Why do they want us to?
Because
their
populations
arent
convinced theres a case for war. They need
to justify their own involvement.
So were on the brink of sending young
New Zealanders to Iraq not because weve
decided its the right thing to do, but because
it will help other countries politicians look
good.
Even worse: for the first time ever,
America and Australia have been negotiating
the terms of engagement directly with Iraq
on our behalf.
Is this the end of New Zealands
proudly independent foreign policy?

Speaking exclusively with financial Express
Online, Faiyaz Koya, minister for industry,

Currently, the traffic from India to Fiji is
comparatively very small.
As of now we do not see a possibility for a
direct flight from Fiji to India. But we have
had several talks with the Government of
India for a codeshare between Fiji Airways
and Air India. We want to increase the
connectivity between India and Fiji.
Singapore Airlines is also one option we are

looking at to have a codeshare.

In 2014, Fiji witnessed an increase of
eight per cent in thenumberof Indian
travellers visiting the island nation.
Speaking about the footfall, minister Koya
said, We have hit the 3000 mark in 2014
which shows a steady increase of eight per
cent compared to 2013.
In this year we will like to double
the figure as India is an important
sourcemarketfor us. In 2015 we expect a
growth rate anywhere between 15 to 20 per
cent.
Recently, Tourism Fiji launched an

construction, medical, energy
amongst other areas in Fiji.
Permanent Secretary for Industry,
trade and Tourism, Shaheen Ali, and
the executive chairman of Investment
Fiji, Truman Bradley, met with
Indian businesshouses to discuss
investment opportunities in Fiji.
The delegation met with a number
of companies, many of which were
very large Indian multinationals that
have an annual turnover of more
than US$400m and have invested
in various countries or partnered
with governments in a number of
countries.
Indian businesses are showing
strong interest in investing in Fiji in
areas, such as, construction, medical,
energy, film making, agriculture, to
name a few Mr Ali said.
Investment between Fiji and
India has immense potential,
especially, with the efforts of the
two governments to create an
enabling environment for trade and
investment to take off.

Last year Fiji and India signed

a Double Taxation Avoidance
Agreement that exempts investors
from being charged taxes twice,
in both countries. However, it is
the private sector and commercial
activities that are the driving force
which will determine the success
of the Governments initiatives and
policies, Mr Ali said.
With
the
renewed
and
strengthened Fiji-India relations
evidenced by the Indian Prime
Ministers visit to Fiji and his
discussions with the Fijian Prime
Minister Hon. Bainimarama, there
are many opportunities available
that will be explored. The interest
from the Indian business community
is an indication of the readiness
of these businesses to come to Fiji
and explore the opportunities, Mr
Bradley said. Mr Ali and Mr Bradley

Thought of the week

The first step toward success is taken when you
refuse to be a captive of the environment in which
you first find yourself.

Editorial

From the desk of the

Managing Editor

- Mark Caine

Funny bone

ast week I talked about the three Ps: Patience, Perseverance and Persistence.
Almost immediately I thought of the fourth, which is perhaps the most
important and that is Positive thinking. So this week we take this a step further
and share with our readers a new feature called Heroes Amongst Us and guess what
our story is about? It is indeed the power of positive thinking.
All the new age gurus across the world today talk about the power of positive
thinking. The law of attraction is nothing but the power of the mind to manifest
what it dreams or desires. There are many stories that prove this and we share one
such amazing story of the journey of a young boy and his family who overcame their
obstacle through the power of positive thinking. Needless to say, any strong thinking
person realizes that there needs to be action to back your positive attitude and make
your dreams a reality.
Talking for dreams turning into reality, our televisions screens lit up with our
men in blue shattering the jinx and completely destroying the strong South African
side in the ICC World Cup. We couldnt help but run this big win as our cover story.
As the World Cup rolls on and everyone seems to be talking cricket, one cannot
help but realize how much of a religion cricket is to us Indians. Terms like overs,
mid wicket, gully, no ball etc are commonplace and we never have to stop to think
what these mean. We grew up listening to these discussions, watching our heroes and
worshipping them. Such is the love us Indians have for cricket.
Excitement is building up at Indian Weekender as we approach that time of the
year when we are buzzing with the excitement of the Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame. This
is our signature event and honours a Kiwi of Indian origin who has made their mark
on their adopted country. Who have achieved, in their chosen field that which others
only aspire to do. This issue carries our first call for nominations for inductees to
the Hall of Fame. If you know someone who you think fits the description, please do
not hesitate to flick us a nomination. It may be pertinent to let everyone know that it
was the decision of the Jury last year that the nominees from last year who made it
to the final shortlist would be rolled over to be considered this year. Last year, that
the nominations received were of very high calibre and the Jury struggled to take
their pick. So heres looking forward to how this grand event unfolds this year. We do
promise to bring all details to our readers, every step of the way.
We also bring you another episode of Modis Mann Ki Baat in this issue. It is
heartening to see that we now have a Prime Minister who speaks directly to the youth
of the country and encourages them to live the best versions of themselves. In todays
world, competition and ambition seem to rule and a lot of our youth have started to
measure their victory and defeat in life with their grades and lose heart and hope if
they fail to meet their own or the expectations laid on them by society or family. It is
important that a clear message is given to youth that victory in life is not measured
by grades or by academic excellence. I truly appreciate Modi urging our youth to be
Warriors and not Worriers. It is important that in the face of any obstacle, we fight
and overcome and never give up hope. It is also important that we do not succumb to
worry and pessimism.
I close with a reminder of the power of positive thinking and wish all our readers
a great week ahead.

New Zealand India relations:

future prospects

Red

sometimes look at the geopolitical situation in the
Asia-Pacific region somewhat
differently. India considers China
to be a security threat.
For New Zealand, however,
China has not as yet achieved the
status of super power, although
its rise has complicated the geopolitics in the region.
China has ambitions for a new
role in a region, where there is
increasing scepticism about the
US ability to deliver security.
On the other hand, one has
to take into account Russias
muscular
posture
and
its
relationship with China; although
mutual distrust still persists.
Chinas trade with the ASEAN
is lot more than the latters
trade with USA or Japan. So
the economic relations should
also be taken into account while
considering security issues.
China has also been dealing
with serious problems, such as
environmental issues (recent
agreement with USA) and middle
class discontent (in Hong Kong,

Prof Sekhar Bandyopadhyay

Director of New Zealand India Research Institute

for example).
Within the OECD group New
Zealand is truly the only small
and distant country, which follows
an independent foreign policy,
consistent with its own values.
It has trade agreements
with Australia, ASEAN, China,
Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea.
With China it has economic
relationship, but no security links.
In terms of trade for NZ, India is
a big gap. So the question is, how
to bridge this gap and where the
interests and concerns of the two
nations might converge.
In this context the issue of
Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is
of crucial importance. It is true
that Indias experience in FTA
negotiations in the past had not
been happy, particularly when
it came to talks on trade vs
services.
But as we understand, NZ wants
a fully developed FTA with India,
not just one facilitating commodity
trade. NZ specialises in a number
of areas of high technology,
such as agritechnology, cold
chain, ICT, healthcare, medical

research, aviation etc. India could

particularly benefit in agricultural
technology,
agro-processing
industry
and
cold-storage.
India wastes about 45% of her
agricultural production every year
because of lack of proper storage
facilities. So by eliminating this
problem she can also ensure food
security for her millions.
Tertiary
education,
skills training and research
collaboration are other areas of
convergence of interests.
New Zealand and India have
also been developing defence
collaboration. Their navy ships
have been visiting each others
shores over the last few years. The
two countries are participating
in a number of multilateral
organisations, such as the East
Asia Summit, ASEAN Defence
Ministers Plus Forum, where
more collaboration is possible.
New Zealands membership of
the Security Council offers further
opportunity for collaboration, as
NZ, like India, is also in favour of
the reform of the Security Council,
and supports Indias claim to a
permanent seat in it.
There is enormous amount
of good will between the two
countries. It now remains to be
seen how that is translated into
a long term mutually beneficial
relationship.

My bad choices - anothers brave

fashion statements
Nury Vittachi

sparrow just flew into

my window. Clearly
the security guards are
playing Birds with me. But I refuse
to let anything distract me from
delivering this crucial warning.
Mankind is sleepwalking towards
a global catastrophe. I am talking,
of course, about the worldwide
epidemic of poor clothing choices.
On the morning of writing this
I saw a huge number of people
(two) wearing orange and brown
checked golf trousers in public.
This was in full view of delicate,
impressionistic
minds,
such
as those of small children and
government ministers.
At work, a colleague showed
me a news report saying that an
adult male wearing an anklelength leopard-print dress walked
into a bank in the US state of
New Hampshire and demanded
a teller hand over the money. He
had no gun - his only weapon was
his atrocious dress sense. It was
enough. She handed over the cash,
realizing that a person with such
bad clothing choices had to be
highly dangerous.
I used to work with a punk rock
fashion victim who once turned
up with her buttons fastened out
of alignment. When I pointed this
out, she snarled: Its fashion, look
it up. I did look it up. It wasnt
fashion. But this line is incredibly

useful for covering up all acts of

sartorial stupidity. Me: I think
you sat on a two-kilo lemon
cheesecake and most of it is still
attached to your nether region.
Her: Its fashion, look it up. Its
not fashion.
In London, the in thing for
the rich is to dress like homeless
people. This is tricky. I meet
someone and never know whether
to give them my business card
or drop small change into their
mug. Getting this wrong is so
humiliating that even halfremembering causes my head to
reboot.
Over-dressing sucks too. I once
turned up at a function at a Grand
Hyatt hotel wearing a hand-made
Nehru suit. As I walked through
the hotel restaurant, everyone
kept trying to press money
and credit cards into my hand,
thinking I was a waiter. I seriously
considered standing in the toilet
for half an hour to collect tips.
Thank God men dont have to
think about accessories. Ill never

forget the time our dentist told my

daughter she needed a crown. Big
smile. I know, right, she grinned.
I might go and ask my nonheterosexual friend for clothing
advice, as he genuinely dresses
better than I do. Must be
something to do with all that time
he had to spend in the closet.
At least I have never bought the
wrong clothes in bulk. A division
of the Chinese army recently
appeared in public wearing a new
uniform, according to a news
report sent to me by a reader.
When the soldiers sat down, more
than 100 pairs of trousers ripped
simultaneously - and audibly.
Im SO glad I wasnt there, as I
would have laughed out loud: not a
good idea when facing angry men
with guns. What the commanding
officer should have done, of
course, is to pretend that the
split, bottom-revealing trousers
were intentional, by explaining
to onlookers: Its fashion, look it
up.

Wise words
A rare conversation between
Ramkrishna Paramahansa and
Swami Vivekananda! One ofthe
best messages one can come
across....

Swami Vivekanand: I cant find free time. Life has become

hectic.
Ramkrishna Paramahansa: Activity gets you busy. But
productivity gets you free.
Swami Vivekanand: Why has life become complicated now?
Ramkrishna Paramahansa: Stop analyzing life. It makes it
complicated. Just live it.
Swami Vivekanand: Why are we then constantly unhappy?
Ramkrishna Paramahansa: Worrying has become your habit.
Thats why you are not happy.
Swami Vivekanand: Why do good people always suffer?
Ramkrishna Paramahansa: Diamond cannot be polished
without friction. Gold cannot be purified without fire. Good
people go through trials, but dont suffer. With that experience
their life becomes better, not bitter.
Swami Vivekanand: You mean to say such experience is
useful?
Ramkrishna Paramahansa: Yes. In every term, Experience is a
hard teacher. She gives the test first and the lessons later.
Swami Vivekanand: Because of so many problems, we dont
know where we are heading
Ramkrishna Paramahansa: If you look outside you will not
know where you are heading. Look inside. Eyes provide sight.
Heart provides the way.
Swami Vivekanand: Does failure hurt more than moving in the
right direction?
Ramkrishna Paramahansa: Success is a measure as decided
by others. Satisfaction is a measure as decided by you.
Swami Vivekanand: In tough times, how do you stay motivated?
Ramkrishna Paramahansa: Always look at how far you have
come rather than how far you have to go. Always count your
blessing, not what you are missing.
Swami Vivekanand: What surprises you about people?
Ramkrishna Paramahansa: When they suffer they ask, why
me? When they prosper, they never ask Why me?
Swami Vivekanand: How can I get the best out of life?
Ramkrishna Paramahansa: Face your past without regret.
Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the future
without fear.
Swami Vivekanand: One last question. Sometimes I feel my
prayers are not answered.
Ramkrishna Paramahansa: There are no unanswered prayers.
Keep the faith and drop the fear. Life is a mystery to solve, not a
problem to resolve. Trust me. Life is wonderful if you know how
to live.
We read and pass on thousands of messages! How many of us
practice to live by it, is what counts! Always look inward its all
in there! Stay happy!

Modis secular pitch can give BJP a new face

Amulya Ganguli

he saffron brotherhood
is apparently coming
to terms with Indias
pluralism - and the constitution.
As Prime Minister Narendra
Modis observation that his
government will act against any
religious group inciting violence
shows he has realized, albeit
belatedly, that he cannot afford to
maintain his dangerous silence,
to quote the New York Times, on
the intimidation of minorities
by Hindu groups affiliated to the
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh
(RSS).
During his prolonged silence,
he may have presumed that his
backstage counsels of restraint
will be accepted by groups such
as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad
(VHP), which have a long history
of fomenting communal trouble.
That the VHP has chosen to
give a contrary interpretation to
Modis speech other than what
is generally supposed, by saying
that the prime minister was only
cautioning the Christians, shows
that it remains unrepentant.
However, when the prime
minister saw that his quietness
was being interpreted as either
weakness
or
acquiescence,
he decided to speak out in
unambiguous terms.
Moreover, by reiterating the
constitutional rights about the
propagation of religions and of
conversions, the prime minister
has turned his back on one of

n keeping up his tradition to

speak to the people of India,
prime Minister Narendra
Modi addressed the nation once
again. This time preparations
for his address had started days
before when students from all
over the country were invited to
participate in this address.
The Prime Minister urged
the students to give up any
stress, compete with themselves
and not with others, and take
examinations as an opportunity to
realise their own potential.
Addressing students preparing
for board and competitive
examinations on his programme
on All India Radio, Modi gave
them some tips to perform
well, stressed the need to move
positively ahead in life without
feeling any undue pressure and
urged them to convert festival

the most provocative of antics

conjured up by the saffronties
in the name of the minorities
returning to their original faith
of Hinduism via a contrived ghar
wapsi or home-coming ceremony.
It is not Modi alone who has
recognized the norms of personal
liberty. The RSS chief, Mohan
Bhagwat, too, has ticked off BJP
MP Sakshi Maharaj for calling
upon Hindu women to bear four
children each. Hindu mothers
are not baby-producing factories,
Bhagwat has said.
However, this advice goes
against the old saffron campaign
cautioning against a demographic
shift in favour of the minorities
with
Bhagwats
predecessor,
the late K.S. Sudarshan, asking
Hindus to have more children.
What these deviations from
the standard saffron line suggest
is that the BJP may soon have
a new face. The fact that it will
bear a close resemblance to the

On his now monthly

radio show Mann Ki
Baat, PM Narendra

than others.
of examinations into a festival of
joy.
Referring to performancerelated stress among students and
even reports of suicides, he, in his
over 25-minute address delivered
in a conversational tone, asked
students not be worriers but be
warriors.
The prime minister, who has
spoken on several issues in his

pseudo-secular demeanours of
the Congress and other non-BJP
parties may be a cause of worry to
the Hindutva camp, but the rest of
the country cannot but welcome
such a change.
It is not impossible that the
latest electoral drubbing in
Delhi has reminded the BJP
that the people voted for it not
to implement the anti-minority
saffron agenda but to revive the
economy which had ground to a
halt under the Manmohan Singh
government.
If Modi persists with his tough
line against the trouble-makers
of his own party and the RSS
affiliates, there will be a new
beginning for India in terms of
both communal harmony and
economic progress.
Such an initiation is likely
to take the country towards the
direction favoured by
Nobel
laureate Amartya Sen, who told
the Jaipur literature festival last
radio talk including drug use, said
that the situation of tension (in
examination) is not good.
Never feel stressed. There
should be a determination to do
good, the morale should be high
but examination should not be a
burden. It is not a test of your life.
Modi confessed that he himself
had been a very ordinary student
with bad handwriting and that
he sometimes just about passed
his exams as the teacher could not
read his answers.
He also asked parents not to
compare their children with those
of their relatives and friends and
not see their childs performance
as a way to earn reputation. This
thought process puts pressure on
your child, he said.
Life is huge and its important
to connect your child with that. If
you talk to children, talk of grand
dreams, of flying high and you will
see that change has begun, he
said.
He also noted that for a persons
self-development,
competition
with others does not give so much
inspiration as competition with

year that he wanted a pro-market,

pro-business party that does not
depend on religious politics and
does not prioritize one religious
community over all the others.
The BJP has a fair chance of
becoming such a party if it can
marginalize its loony fringe like
Britains Labour party once did.
Now that the Congress has
shown signs of pursuing a left-ofcentre path since the right-wing
space does not belong to us, as
party general secretary Digvijay
Singh has said, there is every
possibility of a straightforward
confrontation between the BJP
and parties like the Biju Janata Dal
and the AIADMK on one side and
the Congress, the communists, the
DMK and the caste-based parties
of the Hindi belt on the other.
In that case, the political and
economic scene will have much
greater clarity compared to the
present when Modis neo-liberal
policies are opposed not only by
the Congress, the communists and
others but also by neo-fascistic
elements of the Hindutva lobby.
Whether Modi will win or
lose cannot be said for certain at
present since he will be taking on
elements that have an entrenched
interest in opposing right-wing
policies for varying reasons.
While the Congress opposes
them because it does not want to
abandon the Nehruvian concept
of establishing a socialistic
pattern of society, as a 1955
resolution adopted by the party

said, the communists see the promarket approach as a surrender to

American neo-imperialism.
To the RSS, capitalism is the
extension of a Western model of
the economy and an accompanying
governing
style
based
on
individualism and consumerism
which can undermine the nations
tradition-bound and abstemious
heritage.
On the other hand, parties like
the DMK, the casteist outfits of the
Hindi heartland, the Trinamool
Congress and others favour a
controlled economy since, they
believe, it will enable them to
fill the public sector units with
their party rank and file without
any thought about efficiency and
competitiveness.
In this Utopian, anti-American
and self-serving world in which
there is a curious meeting of minds
between the Left and the Right,
Modi remains virtually the only
one among the top leaders who
has recognized the need to shed
the fetishes of the past and enter
the present globalized economy.
He also seemingly has the
tenacity of purpose to overcome
the obstacles in his path such
as those posed by the Hindutva
Gestapo. If he succeeds, the BJP
will have broken free from the
shackles of the RSS.

ourselves.
Compete with yourself to do
good, to do fast, to do more and
reach new heights. Tomorrow
should be better than yesterday,
focus on that and you will see
that this spirit of competition
will give you so much satisfaction
and happiness that you cannot
imagine, he said, referring to
Olympian Sergey Bubka who had
repeatedly broken his own record
in pole vault.
Modi asked boys to learn
from girl students who do well
in examinations despite helping
their mothers in household
work while he stressed desire
to achieve something should not
waver in a student. Desire plus
stability is equal to determination.
Determination plus hard work
is equal to mastery (siddhi), he
said.
Put yourself totally in the
task. Keep your resolve positive.
A person who daily competes
with himself, no challenge is
big for him. We should take
our own examination daily, he
said, terming examinations an

opportunity to realise ones own

potential and not prove anything
to the world.
He asked students to have
confidence in themselves and not
to worry about results.
Modi also suggested that
teachers
should
organise
examination festival once a week
every six months where there
could be satire and poetry about
examinations as well as cartoons
and declamation contests.
He said there can be lectures
on psychological aspects of
examinations to remove fear and
suggested that it can be part of
syllabus.
Stressing on the fact that he
wants every student going for the
examination to be happy, he said:
Make examination a festival, go
in a happy mood and take pleasure
from each days achievements and
change the atmosphere. Parents,
teachers, schools, every one
should do it and see how it brings
a change.
He also conveyed his best
wishes to students.

The 66-year-old Janata Dal-United

leader was administered the oath of office as
the 24th chief minister of Bihar by Governor
Keshri Nath Tripathi.
Along with Nitish Kumar, 22 ministers
also took oath at a simple ceremony at Raj
Bhavan here. Most of the ministers were in
his earlier cabinet and are considered loyal
and trusted.
This will be Nitish Kumars fourth time as
chief minister. Nitish Kumar had resigned
as chief minister last year after the JD-Us
rout in the Lok Sabha polls. Jitan Ram
Manjhi, who was made chief minister in
May 2014, resigned Feb 20 after a political
row in the state.
JD-U leaders said Nitish Kumar will seek
a meeting with Modi in the first week of
March to request more funds for the states
economic development.
Several of the new ministers touched
Nitish Kumars feet after they took oath.

Nitish Kumar had last year snapped ties

with long-time ally Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) after Narendra Modi was named the
partys prime ministerial candidate. This
proved counter-productive and resulted in
the JD-Us rout in the Lok Sabha polls.
Nitish Kumar, on Feb 20, publicly
apologised to the people of Bihar for his
mistake for having resigned as chief
minister last year.
I admit that I made a mistake by
resigning as chief minister. I publicly
apologise for it to the people of Bihar. Please
forgive me, as I will not repeat my mistake,
he said at a press conference.
In the 243-member assembly, the
JD-U has 115 legislators. The party has the
support of 24 Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)
legislators, five Congress legislators, two
independents and a Communist Party of
India legislator. The BJP has 88 legislators
and is supported by three Independents.

Running parliament smoothly

a collective responsibility: Modi

rime Minister Narendra Modi

last week said it was the collective
responsibility of all parties to run
parliament smoothly to help the common
man meet his aspiration.
Modi, who addressed an all-party
meeting ahead of the budget session, assured
opposition parties that the issues raised by
them will be given due importance.
He stressed the importance of the session
saying that the people look at it with a lot of
hope and expectations.

It is the collective responsibility of all

parties and leaders to enable the people
fulfil their hopes and aspirations through
proper functioning of both the houses of
parliament, a parliamentary affairs ministry
release quoted Modi as saying.
The prime minister also assured the
leaders of all political parties that the
issues and concerns raised by them will be
discussed in an appropriate manner keeping
in view their importance and priority.

Indian-American DJ Patil named as first US

chief data scientist

he White House has

named Dhanurjay DJ
Patil as its first chief data
scientist to help shape policies
and practices to help the US
remain a leader in technology
and innovation.
In a memo to the American
people Thursday, Patil, 45, noted
that the Obama administration
has embraced the use of data to
improve the operation of the US
government and the interactions
that people have with it.
Patil said his role will be to
responsibly source, process, and
leverage data in a timely fashion
to enable transparency, provide
security, and foster innovation
for the benefit of the American
public, in order to maximize the
nations return on its investment

in data.
Patil said he planned to focus
on four activities: Providing
vision on how to provide

maximum social return on

federal data;
Creating nationwide data
policies that enable shared
services and forward-leaning
practices to advance our nations
leadership in the data age;
Working with agencies to
establish best practices for data
management and ensure longterm sustainability of databases;
Recruiting and retaining the
best minds in data science for
public service to address these
data science objectives and act as
conduits among the government,
academia, and industry.
President Barack Obama has
prioritized bringing top technical
talent like DJ into the federal
government to harness the power
of technology and innovation to

help government better serve

the American people, said chief
technology officer Megan Smith.
DJ joins the White House
following an incredible career as
a data scientist - a term he helped
coin - in the public and private
sectors, and in academia, she
said.
Most recently, Patil served as
the Vice President of Product at
RelateIQ, which was acquired by
Salesforce. He also previously
held positions at LinkedIn,
Greylock
Partners,
Skype,
PayPal, and eBay.
Prior to his work in the
private sector, Patil worked at
the Department of Defence,
where he directed new efforts
to bridge computational and
social sciences in fields like

social network analysis to help

anticipate emerging threats to
the United States.
As a doctoral student and
faculty member at the University
of Maryland, DJ used open data
sets published by the National
Oceanic
and
Atmospheric
Administration
(NOAA)
to
make major improvements in
numerical weather forecasting.
He holds a bachelors degree in
mathematics from the University
of California, San Diego, and
a PhD in applied mathematics
from the University of Maryland
College Park.
Patil has also authored a
number of influential articles
and books explaining the
important current and potential
applications of data science.

HOW TO GARNER A BETTER VISION

FOR YOUR MISSION

ave you ever wondered

why some people
are more successful
migrants than others? Why they
get the best jobs and have the
most profitable businesses?
Of course the answer is that
many things contribute to a
persons success and the good
news is that with expert help
everyone can learn the skills
and gain the knowledge they
need to settle in New Zealand
successfully, get their dream job
or become a business leader.
Why do some people settle
here successfully and not
others ?
This is a question that
Aakanksha McClymont asked
herself every day while managing
a large Immigration Law Firm,
McClymont & Associates. Many
of her clients had the same
qualifications and experience
yet some become spectacular
successes in New Zealand and
others did not.
With this in mind, she found
a group of experts who could
distil those secrets to success
and present a masterclass to
assist new migrants in learning
the skills necessary to settle
successfully in New Zealand.
Understanding the Kiwi way
Being successful in your
career or business in New
Zealand means understanding
the importance of local culture
and having an insight into the
way New Zealanders do business
and what employers look for
when they hire a new employee
is essential. Often people
learn correct behaviours and
expectations by trial and error
but making mistakes in front of
a potential employer or business
colleague is not smart. The way
to be successful

is to learn from the experiences

of people who understand the
local customs and are already
successful. Investing time to
practice the skills you need
before you go for an important
interview or meeting is the smart
way to success.
For example, at a job
interview, there is an expected
way to greet your potential
employer and a few common
questions that you are likely to
be asked no matter what job you
are applying for. You need to
practice introducing yourself and
answering the questions so that
you speak clearly, provide the
information that is required and
appear confident and engaged.
The team at Settling for
Success, a New Zealand company
based in Auckland that help
immigrants to New Zealand to
achieve the success they want for
themselves, agree.
Negotiating the process of
getting a work or resident visa
is just the start, says Alastair
McClymont, Director of Settling
for Success. People need
to understand New Zealand
business etiquette so they dont
make embarrassing mistakes
and they need to be aware of New
Zealand employment law so they
know what is acceptable in the
workplace.
First impressions matter
Another key to achieving
personal success is to understand
the importance of your personal
brand.
Successful people know that
in todays competitive market,
academic qualifications and
work/ business experience are
not enough to land a perfect
job or business deal and they
understand
that
knowing
how to present themselves
professionally is critical

to their success.
Its important to appreciate
how others respond to you
the first time you meet. More
importantly, you should know
what to do to ensure that your
appearance and behaviour make
a strong positive impression
when you go for a job interview
or make a sales pitch. You only
get one chance to make a first
impression, says Jayne Muller,
Director of Settling for Success.
Its a minefield, especially for
people who have recently arrived
in New Zealand and are trying to
start a new career or business,
but its possible to learn what to
do to fit in with the Kiwi way of
doing things.
Creating a personal pathway
to success
Ask any successful person
what their goals are and they
will rattle off a list of things that
they want to achieve, how they
are going to do it and what their
timeframe is. People without
a plan drift from one thing to
another and although they work
hard, they never seem to achieve
the success that they desire.
Without a plan, a goal is just
a dream, says Fiona Fenwick,
Director of Settling for Success.
We help our clients to think
about what they want to
achieve in their

professional lives and open

their minds to possibilities they
may not have thought about.
Writing down their vision and
the key steps they need to take
makes their dream become
more achievable. This exercise
unlocks their own unique picture
of success and fills them with
energy. We see it all the time
in our masterclass and its a
wonderful moment.
Once you are clear about
your goals, Settling for Success
can help build the skills needed
to get a dream job or business
deal. From understanding how
to make a good first face-toface impression to knowing that
an impressive CV is not just
about having the right words on
the page. Employers receive
hundreds of CVs for the jobs
they advertise so you have to
know how to write your CV and
cover letter in a way that shows
why you should be invited for an
interview says Donna McTavish,
Director of Settling for Success.
Your CV should be the one that
stands out from all the rest and

doesnt end up in the wastepaper

bin.
Bridging the culture gap
Immigrants to New Zealand
quickly learn how different the
Kiwi culture is in all aspects of
life from social behaviour to
business practices. The team at
Settling for Success point out
the differences and ensure that
the talent and experience that
immigrants bring to New Zealand
is not lost in translation. Best
practice in one culture can be
seen as disrespectful in another
culture, says Fiona Fenwick. At
Settling for Success, we want to
make sure that our clients are
aware of the differences and
know how to build a platform for
success for themselves, and for
New Zealand.

The Bird and the Monkey

There lived a group of monkeys in the mountains. During
one winter, there were heavy
rains. Drenched in the rain,
they began to shiver in the
cold.
During this time, some of the
monkey found some colourful
Gunja fruits, which appeared
to them as embers of fire.
Hoping to make some fire for themselves, they began to blow at
them.A bird on a nearby tree was watching the monkeys from
above. Considering the vain attempts the monkeys were busy
with, it thought of advising them against it, What big fools you
are. You are blowing at some Gunja fruits and not embers of fire.
You will never be able to make any
fire out of them.
What you are doing is a waste of
time. These fruits will not help you
to protect yourself against the cold.
Go and find some shelter instead.
You may find a cave or a burrow
where you will be protected from
the rains and the cold winds.
The monkeys did not like his advice. One of the old monkeys said, Go fool yourself.
Why are you interfering in our
task?But the bird disagreed.
Not heeding what the old monkey had said, it flew down from
the tree and persisted that the
monkeys stop what they were
doing. The monkey ignored his
chatter but the bird refused to
stop.In an effort to convince
the monkeys, the bird came close
to explain that their efforts
were useless.Already
frustrated by their vain efforts, the monkeys became furious.
One of the monkeys caught hold of the bird and smashed him
against a stone in anger, killing him.
The wise indeed say: Never give advice unless you are asked
for it.

BREAKING THROUGH THE BARRIERS

Swati Sharma

he
male
dominant
world has always placed
barriers on women to
behave in a particular manner.
Do this, dont do that, watch your
language, wear certain clothes,
dont wearcertain clothes, watch
who you mix with; the neverending barriers dont seem to
ever fall away..
Times have changed and so
has the lifestyles and socialbehaviours. Its time for us now
to reclaim our individuality, its
time to let the world know that
we are sick and tired of others
telling us what to do and what
not to do. And when I say this, I
speak for all of us (women). We
would rather live our life on our
own terms and conditions rather

than following a set standard

of rules and regulation on how
should women behave.
Here is my take on some
aspects we need to stand up, to
have a happy and augmented life:

personality. If you dont like a

woman, let it be. You can like or
hate whosoever you want. But
do not humiliate her. It leads to
other people being sympathetic
to the one being humiliated.

You are beautiful just the

way you are

You shall not marry just

because your parents want
you to

You need not compare yourself

to anyone. You are the best when
you are yourself and not try to
fit in others frames of approval.
Everyone has their own definition
of beauty and its important that
we are comfortable in our own
skin. You shall not try to put
down other women
World has been saying this
from ages that the greatest
enemy of a woman is another
woman. When you try to put
down other woman it reflects
your shallowness and hence your

Because after all its you, whos

going to live your life and not
your parents. Makeup your mind
when you want to. Make sure you
get the right person which you
are comfortable with. And most
important, does your heart beat
for him? If yes! Go for it.
You shall live your life on
your own terms without
being too concerned about
social norms
Society has been following
norms established ages ago. This
is not the Stone Age anymore.
We are living in the modern
electronic age. This is the age of
opportunities. No one profession
is limited to a particular sex. Men
and women both are capable of
doing anything they want or like.
So dont worry and follow your
heart.
You shall stand up for the
equality of both sexes
Because blaming the society is
not enough. US President Obama
says, Change will not come if
we wait for some other person
or some other time. We are the
ones, weve been waiting for. We
are the change that we seek. So
if you really want yourself to be

treated equally, get up and stand

for it.
You shall wear whatever you
want
Do you also like to wear
shorts while you walk down the
street? Do you also want to feel
comfortable while you wear a
bikini on the beach, in spite of
some perverts staring at you?
Then do not worry. Its all about
your comfort and pleasure.
Forget bothering about what
people will think. Let them do
their business and you do yours.
You shall not waste your time
gossipingGossiping is too old
fashioned. Why not try reading
some interesting books or online
shopping or even taking selfies.
These things will give you more
contentment than gossiping.
You shall learn to let go
things and not hold on
Would you enjoy carrying a
rotten apple with you all the time
and roam around with the stinky
smell? Or does torturing yourself
give you immense pleasure? I
dont think it does. Then why
hold on to feelings and emotions
beyond their use by date.
I remember a quote by Ajahn
Chah, an influential teacher of
Buddhadhamma in which he
says, If you let go a little, you
will have a little peace. If you
let go a lot, you will have a lot
of peace. So let it go as more as
you can. You can try exercising to

Check partners fingers as you kneel

ave a good look at your

partners fingers during
the ring ceremony as
men with short index fingers and
long ring fingers are nicer towards
women, says a study.
This unexpected phenomenon
stems from the hormones these
men have been exposed to in their
mothers womb, say researchers
from McGill University. The
findings may also help explain
why these men tend to have more
children.
It is fascinating to see that
moderate variations of hormones
before birth can actually influence
adult behaviour in a selective
way, said Simon Young, McGill
Emeritus Professor in psychiatry
and co-author of the study.
The study shows a link
between a biological event in
foetal life and adult behaviour.
Mens index fingers are generally

shorter than their ring fingers and

this difference is less pronounced
in women.
Previous research has found
that digit ratio - defined as the
second digit length divided by
the fourth digit length - is an
indication of the amount of male
hormones (mainly testosterone)
that someone has been exposed
to as a foetus.
The smaller the ratio, the
more male hormones. The study
suggests that this has an impact
on how grown up men behave
especially with women.
When with women, men with
smaller ratios were more likely to
listen attentively, smile and laugh,
compromise
or
compliment
the other person, said Debbie
Moskowitz, lead author and
professor of psychology.
These men were also less
quarrelsome with women than

with men, whereas the men

with larger ratios were equally
quarrelsome with both.
Although for women, digit
ratio variation failed to predict
their behaviour, researchers said.
Our research suggests these
men have more harmonious
relationships with women. This
might explain why they have
more children on average, the
authors said.

The research appeared in

the journal Personality and
Individual Differences.

Our true self is who we really

Komal Patel, who runs Green Trading, an online organic store, with her husband Rohan, talks about
her experiences when their seven-year-old boy was detected with leukaemia
Paula Ray
What has been the most
difficult phase of your life so
far?
When I came to know that my
son, Chinmay, had Leukaemia
and the doctors told me
to give him a good time.
He was 7 years and 10 months old
and was on student visa when he
got diagnosed. He was here with
his dad and I was back in India. He
had fever and sore legs. So he was
taken to a local GP and he suspected
of Meningococcaldisease and
immediately reffered to Starship
Hospitals emergency department.
They
admitted
him
immediately,
and
he
was
diagnosed
with
leukaemia
the same day. He was kept in
isolation overnight and the very
next morning they started his
treatment.
He was on student visa, and the
insurance provider didnt want to
send him to India for treatment,
as it will cost a lot.
What did you do to overcome
it?
In a few days I came to Auckland.
We struggled a lot with his
treatment, especially to get a
perfect match bone marrow.
In India, there are no bone
marrow banks. The Indian
hospitals dont do bone marrow
transplant. So they asked us
not to come to India as it will be
dangerous for my son to travel
with that condition. When he was
diagnosed, the disease has spread
up to 98 per cent.
Doctors told that if we cannot
find exact match, then a sibling
can donate bone marrow. We
registered here for bone marrow
transplant. My son was so lucky
that we found exact 100 per cent
match soon and moreover, it was
stem cell bone marrow.

Our son had a successful

transplant. But his pain didnt
end there. For about four years
he suffered from a lot of pain
and severe health conditions. His
body cells were trying to fit in
with the new bone marrow.
He was on morphine and
steroids. But he stayed positive
all the time and we did too. We
didnt lose hope. We stayed
positive, wove colourful dreams
with our son andtried to keep to
regular routines.
What changes did you make
to your lifestyle and how did
it change your life?
Life is much better after the
changes weve made in our dayto-day living. We make almost all
necessary things at home. Initially,
our children refused to use them,
but then they saw theeffectiveness
and now they are happily using
them.
We are trying to help others
through our online organic
store called Green Trading. It
started after we experienced the
positivity of all the things I made
for my family. Living with nature
and using natural products is a
better way to heal yourself. It is

DDLJs reign over our hearts will

continue: Farida Jalal
H
er role as a supportive
mother in Dilwale
Dulhania Le Jayenge
(DDLJ) carved a special place
for Farida Jalal.
As Maratha Mandir last
week,
brought
down
the
curtains on DDLJ after 20
years, the veteran actress says
the final curtain call is sad but
the movie will live in the hearts
of people forever.
It is sad that it (the film) is
leaving.
They
(theatre
owners)
shouldnt have removed it and
let it run, the actress told media
over phone.
But the charm of the movie
will live on forever, she added.
The film, which won 10
Filmfare Awards, including best
film, best actor, best actress
and best director at the 1996
edition of the ceremony, had
been running uninterrupted at
this single-theatre cinema hall
at its usual playing time slot of

11:30 am. And the last show of

the film was held Thursday.
The film, which was first

screened at Maratha Mandir in

October 1995, was undergoing its
20th year of uninterrupted run

at the iconic cinema hall. It

also holds the record of the
longest running film in the
history of Indian cinema.
The actress is quick to
note that no other movie
can recreate the magic of
DDLJ, which featured Shah
Rukh Khan, Kajol, Anupam
Kher and late Amrish Puri.
No movie can match the
mark it created. It was one
of a kind movie. We had so
much fun while shooting
for the film. I cherish all
the memories around it,
she said.
Produced by the late Yash
Chopra, the film marked Aditya
Chopras debut as a director.
DDLJ has a simple story -- a
fun loving London-bred Punjabi
boy Raj (Shah Rukh) meets an
NRI simpleton Simran (Kajol)
during an European holiday.
Love
blossoms
between
them, but winning over the
girls conservative family is not

a cakewalk for the hero, who

then makes every effort to take
his dulhania (bride) with him.
Be it the Raj and Simran
chemistry, iconic dialogues
like Bade bade shehron mein
chhoti chhoti baatein hoti rehti
hain or Ja Simran ja, jee le
apni zindagi, mustard fields-all the unforgettable hallmarks
of DDLJ live on.

Badlapur
happened
because of
Raghavan: Huma

ctress Huma Qureshi,

who is getting good
reviews
for
her
performance in her latest release
Badlapur, has given credit to its
director Sriram Raghavan.

We feel good when we get

appreciation because as actors
we work for appreciation. I thank
Sriram Raghavan. Its just because
of him the film happened. The way
he conceived all the characters,
the way he directed all of us is
amazing.
If I have done a bit of good
work in the film, I would credit
my entire performance to him
(Raghavan), Nawaz (Nawazuddin
Siddiqui) and Varun (Dhawan),
Huma said last week at the
screening of Badlapur.
I think when you work with
good actors you automatically
perform good, she added.
Badlapur, which released
Friday last week, is a dark and
intense revenge drama.

ctor
Nawazuddin
Siddiqui, who has proved
his mettle in films such as
Paan Singh Tomar and Gangs of
Wasseypur, says that small budget
films are not promoted on a huge
scale in India.
When asked if he feels that small
budget films are not promoted the
way high budget films are done, he
told media: I agree. Small (budget)
films are not promoted on huge
scale in India. My film Miss Lovely

was appreciated worldwide

and made money outside
India too but it didnt run here.
It was a film made in Rs. 1.5
crore and there were hardly any
promotions. I want the small films
to be promoted so that people get to
know about the film. People knew
that the film has achieved a lot but
they didnt know that it has been
released so that affects your film,
he added.
The actor is currently busy
promoting his film Badlapur.
Directed by Sriram Raghavan
the film also features Varun
Dhawan, Yami Gautam, Huma
Quereshi among others. I am
not a revengeful person: Divya
Dutta Actress Divya Dutta,
though excited about her first
dark and intense revenge drama
Badlapur, says she is not a
revengeful person in real life.
It (revenge) depends on who
the person is. But my revenge
will be harmless unlike my film
(Badlapur), Divya said at the
films screening here when asked
whether she ever gets a chance to
take revenge. The 37-year-old is
impressed with her Badlapur
co-star Varun Dhawan and feels
proud of him in his taking the

risk of doing a dark and intense

film so early in his career.
It is an amazing step.
Somebody who has just arrived
with four films and has a
different image and is a star to
take this kind of a different role
altogether. I love such people
who take on variety and try to
experiment, said the actress,
who has been in the film industry
for more than two decades.

Directed by Sriram Raghavan,

Badlapur
also
features
Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma
Qureshi and Yami Gautam.

Fortunate to
work with Nana
Patekar: Gul
Panag

ctress Gul Panag, who

will be seen in Ab Tak
Chappan 2, says she

agreed to do the film because

of her role and acclaimed actor
Nana Patekar.
Ab Tak Chappan 2 is a sequel
to the Shimit Amin directed
2004 release Ab Tak Chhappan
that featured Nana and Mohan
Agashe. In the sequel, Gul Panag
will be seen as a crime reporter
who works with Nanas character
in the film to investigate a case.
When I came to know
that I have been signed for
Ab Tak Chappan sequel, my
first question was what will
be my character in the film ?
Because the prequel was about
encounter and squad which is
a very male dominated system.
To this they said that I will play
an investigative journalist,
the 36-year-old said here in an
interview.
Besides, I was told that
Nana Patekar is there in the
film. So I was thrilled at these
two opportunities - working
with Nana Patekar and playing a
crime reporter, she added.
The former beauty queen
feels fortunate to work with
Nana Patekar and said: its been
wonderful working with Nana
and I feel an actor who gets a
chance to work with Nana is very
fortunate.
Directed by Aejaz Gulab,
Ab Tak Chappan 2 is slated to
release Feb 27.

ow did you train

yourself for this career?
Tell us about the
sacrifices you had to make and
the tough times that you went
through.
I started eating good following
my full diet plan, training harder
and also running a lot. I also got
prepared mentally for my fights.
I wake up early at4amand go
for a 10km run every day. Come
back home after the run and start
skipping, punching and cardio for
about 2 hours. After a rest for an
hour, I go to bodybuilding gym
for 3 hours. Come back home to
rest for 2 hours, then I start doing
sparing for 15 rounds.
Altogether 7 hours a day is my
daily routine of exercise, both
boxing and bodybuilding. The
preparations give me so much
more confidence to engage in
boxing. I try and train harder
than people in the gym with me
in general and I also make sure I
learn something new every day.

It was very tough, because
there were no Indians into

There are Indians fighting,
