Undercut

When considering manufacturing processes, undercut is seen as a special type of

carved in surface. In turning it is known as a neck, a recess in diameter whereas in
machining it is represented by a recess in corner. This effect is more frequent with
etching, thereby producing a larger cavity than expected and this is seen as a side
effect. The two causes of undercut in this process are over etching and the use of an
etchant that etches in all directions equally. However, in electrical discharge
machining, the undercut produced is not pronounced or even negligible. The figures
below give an idea of the type of undercuts produced by some of the mentioned
processes.
