Plot in literature is a term used to describe the events in a story that make up the
main story line. Oedipus the King is the Greek tragedy that takes place in Thebes, which
geographically lies just Northwest of Athens. The influential characters in this play
include Creon, whom is not only the brother of Oedipuss sister, but also his right hand
man throughout the play (despite being accused of conspiracy towards the end of the
play). Jacosta who is the wife of Oedipus and stands by his side, of course until she hears
word of Oedipus and the prophecy. The prophecy that served as a shifting point for the
play was bestowed upon Oedipus courtesy of Tiresius, the blind prophet. Also from the
readers standpoint the Chorus was important in explaining pivotal information about the
characters in the era. Oedipus re-walks the path of the Greek tragic hero as he becomes a
miser by following the prophecy. He unknowingly murders his father and finds out
Jacosta is also her mother. Another key action of the play is when Oedipus the King
rejects Tiresius prophecy about his parents and later on when he finds out it is true he
blinds himself.
