Figure 1 shows a welded structure loaded with two forces F) and F> at point D. It is supported by a pin joint at A and a roller at B. Calculate the forces (magnitude and direction) at 4 and B. [10 marks] Neglect the mass of the structure and any effects of friction, AC = 120mm AD = 240mm, BC= 120mm Fi =S00N Figure 1 Page 2 of 4 [MEC1011] 2. A uniform disc of mass 2 kg and 200 mm diameter runs freely on ball bearings at a speed of 1500 rev/min, spinning about its polar axis. It is brought to rest by a brake which applies a torque T which is inversely proportional to the angular velocity 4 of the wheel so that a) Find the polar moment of inertia for the dise (formula may be quoted or derived). [4 marks] b) What will be the units of the constant 7.4? [4 marks] c) Find the time taken for the disc to be brought to rest. [12 marks] [Turn over Page 3 of 4 [MEC1011] 3. A monorail car with front wheel drive and mass of 5 tonnes is suspended from two wheels 10m apart as shown in Figure 2. Its centre of mass G is mid way between the wheels and 4m below the rail. a) Starting from rest, the train is designed to achieve a maximum speed of 200kn/hr in 30s with uniform acceleration, Calculate the minimum coefficient of friction between the front wheel and the rail to achieve this. [14 marks} b) Determine the acceleration that could be achieved with the same coefficient of friction if rear wheel drive was used, and hence the time to reach 200km/hr.
