BOLT HEATERS
This manual covers general instructions for a proper application of the bolt heaters.
This manual also includes the specific important notice for safety when using the bolt heaters.
1) Do not use the bolt heaters except a qualified and skillful person because incorrect and
improper use will cause electric shocks and burns.
2) Do not touch the heating elements of the bolt heaters because the hot elements will cause
burns.
1. Introduction
The bolt heaters are provided in order to ease disassembling and reassembling work by thermal
extension of the bolts due to the electrical heaters when loosening and tightening the casing horizontal
joint bolts and the steam valves cover joint bolts.
2. General Instructions
1) Each specified extension value of the bolts should be checked with the maintenance drawings,
“Arrangement of Joint Studs’.
2) Ground from the power source panel or box before turning on the electricity.
3) Insert the heaters softly into the bolt holes. Do not drop or throw away those.
4) Do not insert or draw out the live or hot heaters. It can cause a break of the heaters.
5) The whole heating elements area should be immersed into the bolt holes for efficient heating.

6) Do not use the bolt heaters for any other bolts except the specified ones or other devices. If the bolt
heater is inserted into a larger hole than expected, a wide space between the bolt and the heater will
cause poor heat conduction and the surface temperature of the heater will rise abnormally, resulting
in shortening the life of the heater.

7) When the bolt heaters are in storage, their insulation resistance may possibly fall due to moisture
absorbed to the heaters. If such a poor insulation resistance happens, heat the non heating area up
to 300deg.C (570deg.F) to 400deg.C (750degF) with a gas burner and switch on the heater during
three to four minutes. Then the insulation resistance may be recovered if it is caused due to
moisture.
50mm: Non heating area
8) Keep the minimum bending radius of the flexible heaters.
