Candace Gary Reflection


Candace Gary was the guest speaker who spoke at one of the Student Financial
Planning Association meetings. To start off, Gary used many inspirational quotes
that she liked. Before becoming a Certified Financial Planner, Gary graduated with a
Bachelors degree in Broadcast Journalism, moved up north, and even owned her
own coffee shop.

Gary has a very entrepreneurial personality, and it was well illustrated during her
presentation. After moving back to Baton Rouge, Gary started her own Financial
Planning firm, and later merged her firm with her fathers. Operating on a referral
basis only, Gary spent a lot of time speaking about the importance of long-lasting
relationships and how that has established a significant amount of trust between
her and her clients, and therefore her clients show genuine interest in working with
her. This ties in directly with when we talked about establishing the client/planner
relationship in class. It was extremely beneficial to be able to apply what we learned
in class directly to her personal examples. After reflecting on the presentation and
connecting it to class discussions, I believe that one of the things that makes Mrs.
Gary successful is the fact that she not only establishes the client/planner
relationship, but keeps that relationship going strong. Most Financial Planners care
about the relationships they have with their clients, but Mrs. Gary takes it
personally, and goes one step further, which I believe helps her stand out against the
competition.
