LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

WELCOME MAVERICKS FANS!
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the historic sixth season
of Missouri Mavericks hockey. Historic because of the new adventure that
awaits the Mavs for the 2014-15 season!
This season comes with great excitement as the Mavs have joined the ECHL,
the Premier AA hockey league in North America, and are eager to showcase
the best fans in the hockey world to new faces in new places.
Last season came with great accomplishment as the organization was
rewarded with its fourth consecutive Franchise of the Year honor and on the
ice, secured a franchise record 44 wins and the CHLs Governors Cup for the
most regular season points in the league (90 points).
But as we turn the page and look forward to new rivalries, new challenges and a new leader in our new
head coach, former NHL star Richard Matvichuk, we are gracious and humbled to have all of the Orange
Army by our side joining us in the quest for the Mavericks first Championship.
We strive to give you the best entertainment experience coupled with a successful franchise that you are
proud to support with unmatched character and community presence.
We look forward to a memorable, competitive and exciting season and thank you for your support!

Go Mavs,
Brent Thiessen

NEW owner
Lamar Hunt, Jr.
By Bill Althaus
Bill.althaus@examiner.net
Lamar Hunt Jr., is the new owner of
the Missouri Mavericks.
Hunt Jr., is the son of Lamar Hunt, the
late founder of the American Football
League and the man responsible for
bringing NFL football to Kansas City
back in 1963.
The Hunt familys sports holdings are
split equally among Lamar Seniors
four children. While a member of the
founding family of football in Kansas
City his brother Clark is the Chiefs
chairman and CEO this is his first
venture into owning a professional
hockey team.
I first contacted Brent Thiessen
by phone in August of 2104, Hunt
said, referring to the Mavericks
president and general, and began
the conversation. This really began
escalating in the past few months.
I attended a game and was so
impressed with the Events Center and
the total package presented by the
Mavericks the hockey team they put
on the ice, the total package that kept
everyone entertained throughout the
night and the passion of the fans.
While the team had not been on
the sale block, the ownership group
that was headed by Lubbock, Texas
residents Matt Adams, his brother
Mark and Mark Carper, listened to
Hunts offer and they were able to
reach a deal.
This will be the first time the
Mavericks will be operated by a
local owner.
I want to assure the fans that this
team is going to stay right here in
Independence in the Independence
Events Center, Hunt said. The Events
Center is a great asset of the team.
The size of the arena is perfect for this
hockey team.
Thiessen
and
coach
Ricard
Matvichuk will also be a part of
the Mavericks future. Thiessen has
signed a new contract extension and
Matvichuk will be back for his second
year in the ECHL.
The hockey people are going to be
running the hockey operations and we
are going to do everything possible to
give them all they need to make this a

11

Lamar Hunt, Jr. 2015 John Howe, Howe Creative Photography, Missouri Mavericks
successful team, Hunt added.
Hunt said there are three areas he
will address to make the Mavericks a
more vibrant, visible and successful
franchise.
First, we want to have a good
affiliation with an NHL and/or AHL
team and to associated with strong
Division I hockey programs to help
develop the sport in the metro area
and the Midwest, Hunt said.
Second, we want to develop hockey
youth programs in the metro area, he
added. We want young people to
come here to play hockey and learn
about the sport.
Third, we want to reach into the
Kansas City metro area so people
in the Greater Kansas City area and
Johnson County know what people in
Independence, Blue Springs and Lees
Summit already know this is a great
hockey team and organization.
And yes, he does have a key to the
Zomboni, and he will demonstrate his
skills at an upcoming game.
Ive driven the Zamboni, he joked,
and havent done any damage yet.
Hunt is the founder of Loretto
Companies, LLC, a real estate
investment company specializing in
the operation and management of
residential properties, as well as Loretto
Foundation, LLC, a private charitable
organization. Both companies are
based in the greater Kansas City area.

He is also a member of the board

of the Kansas City Chiefs Charitable
Foundation and also serves on the
Advisory Board of the Catholic Radio
Network, a religious broadcasting
group that operates radio stations in
the greater Kansas City, Wichita, and
Denver markets.
He graduated from the University
of Cincinnati College-Conservatory
of Music with a Bachelor of Music
Degree and later completed a Master
of the Arts degree in counseling at
Dallas Baptist University. He was
also a flutist in the Kansas City
Symphony for nine seasons. He is
a Licensed Professional Counselor
(LPC) in both Kansas and Missouri,
where he worked with neglected
and abused teenagers, homeless
men with addiction problems, and
families in crisis.
Two of his passions in life are classical
music (from Gregorian Chant to
Dimitri Shostakovitch) and promoting
healthy family relationships in the
community. He and his wife Rita have
nine children and five grandchildren.
Bill Althaus is an award-winning
columnist and sports writer for
The Examiner. He is a past winner
of the CHLs Media Service Award
and has been the Mavericks beat
writer since they came to town in
2009. You can find his stories at
