Dahl
Boy
Roald Dahl, the much-loved childrens writer, was born in Llandaff, Wales on 16th
September 1916 to Norwegian parents. His father died when he was 3 years old
therefore he was raised by his mother alone. He had a fairly unhappy time at
boarding school, which provided some of the inspiration for his later stories.
Flying Solo
After leaving school he worked for the Shell Oil Company based in Africa until the
outbreak of World War II, when he signed up with the Royal Air Force.
Unfortunately, he was injured in action and eventually returned home as an
invalid. He was then sent to Washington DC to work as an attach where, almost
by accident, he started his writing career.
In 1943 he wrote his first childrens book, The Gremlins, which was originally
intended to be made into an animated film by Walt Disney however, the film was
not made therefore Dahl turned to writing adult fiction instead, and he didnt write
another childrens story until the 1960s.
Roald the Writer
By this time he was a father himself and had started making up stories to
entertain his own children. From this came the stories of James and the Giant
Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Over time, he went on to write 21
childrens books including Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, The BFG, Matilda
and The Witches, all of which have been made into successful and popular films.
The Final Chapter
Although Roald Dahl enjoyed a great deal of success in his life, he also endured
an unusual number of tragedies involving those closest to him. Olivia, his oldest
daughter, died after contracting measles. Roalds four-month-old son, Theo, who
was his only son, suffered a brain injury following a traffic accident in New York.
Finally, his first wife Patricia Neal, the famous Hollywood actress, had a severe
stroke from which she took a long time to recover. Tragically, Roald Dahl died on
23rd November 1990. Following his death, his books went on to gain even more
fame, fortune and fans. Roalds family has set up many charities in his name,
which are supported by the riches from the sale of books.
