Leading Your Youth Sports Organization

The purpose of the PCA Leading Your Youth Sports Organization workshop is to train participants on the
theory and practice of building a positive sports environment. A defining responsibility of a youth sports lead
is to build and shape culture. PCA content explores what it takes to succeed in doing so. The goals of the
workshop are to:
1. Explore a vision for a truly excellent, positive youth sports program
2. Identify how to bring coaches, parents, and athletes in line with this vision
3. Document youth organizations Culture Shaping Action Plan
Overview of PCA Leadership & Culture Shaping Big Ideas

Discussion and identification of your goals as a leadership team


Understanding the youth sports spectrum: characteristics across the spectrum and outcomes for kids
Shaping culture is a primary leadership task
Leadership is about teaching new ideas & selling people on their value
Leadership requires measurement & reward to be effective
Review PCAs core principles of ELM Tree of Mastery, Emotional Tanks & Honoring the Game
Review PCAs core principles for Sports Parents: big picture vs. little picture, what we say vs. what we
do, and Growth Mindset
A 6-step Culture Shaping Game Plan that includes the following
1. Workshop attendance
2. Double-Goal Coach Action Plan
3. Double-Goal Coach Awards
4. Second-Goal Parent strategies
5. Communication with coaches and parents
6. Responding to negative events
The topics above are presented with a focus on gathering and sharing best practices from PCAs most
successful partners from around the country. The workshop is a working session where Leadership teams are
allotted time for planning and discussion on the topics. It is highly recommended that the Leadership
workshop include the following people from your association:

Influential and Active Parents

Time Needed for the Workshop: 90 minutes to 2 hours


Materials: Writing instrument for all participants; books if made available
