Dear 4-H members, families and adult volunteers:

The San Benito County 4-H Council uses the Travel Letter of Intent as a budgeting tool.
By having members and volunteers indicate their intentions about traveling to
conferences in the upcoming year, the budget can be adjusted to provide adequate
funding in the appropriate budget category. San Benito County is unique in the
statewide 4-H program in being able to fund at 100% conference travel of eligible
members and volunteers in good standing. Please see the Participation Requirements
for definition of being a member in good standing.
Completion of the Letter of Intent does not obligate you to attend the conference nor
would you be excluded from funding if you do not complete it. Again, this is strictly a
budgetary tool. We would hope that each member and volunteer would thoughtfully
consider each of the conferences as a mechanism for enhancing the your 4-H
experience. Following is a brief description of the conferences, age requirements and
approximate travel dates.
California Focus: high school members (including 8th grad graduate) This
citizenship-based educational trip program provides 5 days of hands-on participation in
workshops, debates and simulations with outstanding speakers and visits to historical,
cultural and governmental sites. Californias capital city, Sacramento, becomes a
living classroom adventure for 4-H members. A plan of action and report are required
by the State 4-H office. Conference is held mid June.
Washington Focus: 10th grade graduate, 11th & 12th grades and 2+ years of 4-H
completed in San Benito County. This citizenship-based educational trip program,
held in Washington D.C., combines visits to historical and cultural attractions with
educational workshops and simulations. Seven and ten day programs available. 4H members will have an opportunity to meet with legislators personally to discuss
contemporary issues. 4-H members will learn how proposals are funded and public
policy is administered. A Plan of Action and Report are required by the State 4-H
office. Travel late June to early July.
State Leadership Conference: 8th grade graduates, 9th-12th grade members This
4 day conference provides advanced leadership training and the opportunity for
statewide networking and idea sharing. Conference generally held late July, site is
rotated on the various UC campuses.
Leadership Conference of Regional Teens (LCORT): 7th, 8th, 9th grade members
This conference (travel in Friday evening, return Sunday afternoon) provides an
environment for 4-H members to: define and develop their leadership abilities, meet
and share ideas with other 4-H members, expand their perspective of the world around
them, and have an enjoyable time. Conference is held mid January in Fresno
county.
California State 4-H Leaders Forum: appointed adult leaders This conference
provides appointed adult volunteers with education, a networking opportunity to further
their volunteering career, and inspirations/new ideas to bring home to their countys
4-H program. Conference is held in early November.
Western Region 4-H Leaders Forum: appointed adult leaders This conference
provides appointed adult volunteers with education, a networking opportunity to further

their volunteering career, and inspirations/new ideas to bring home to their countys
4-H program. Conference is held in Spring in one of the thirteen western
states.
